Review updated from my previous cruises

Update May 2025: we had our third cruise booked with Vegan Travel and unfortunately my partner had an accident and was in hospital for 7 days (he's fully recovered as I'm writing this Mid-June). This happened 8 days before the cruise so I wrote to them hoping maybe they could help somehow. The only thing they offered was to send the cancellation invoice. No gesture at all. I told them it's my third trip with you (and the fourth one was booked as well), I mean I almost felt like being part of a family. Answer: we treat our clients exactly the same, weather they traveled one, 10 or 100 times with us. Hm ok.... -_- I ended up accepting to get the cancellation invoice, so I could ask the bank card insurance a reimbursement, without much hope.

Meanwhile, we had literally 0 empathy from Vegan Travel and Dirk himself said, as to someone else in another review, that "it's a business not a charity". Moreover, our friends who were on the cruise told us that our cabin was sold to someone on the waiting list (the waiting list that they said they didn't have), and they have refused to reimburse fully our deposit for the Caribbean cruise which will take place in February 2026. We are still thinking if we cancel it or not, and lose the 100 € fee per person. It's truly unbelievable how they treat their clients so rudely. I'm so disappointed, i never expected that from a small and vegan business. I truly felt like they took advantage of our misfortune, as they fully cashed our money (4200 euros!!), then sold our cabin the same day we canceled, plus did not accept to return our deposit fully even though the 4th cruise booked was almost a year away. Really disappointing. Even if I enter McDonald's to use their toilet they would treat me better. Vegan travel is a shame to the vegan movement, and I will never recommend them again (all the contrary). I prefer cruising with traditional cruise lines, but who treat you normally and make you feel good.
Our friends did tell us that there were several problems during that particular cruise which was in Croatia: rude staff who were eating meat in front of them, found a sticker in their smoothie, and described it as a "really expensive tour with a cheap surrounding".

2023: My second cruise with Vegan Travel and I'm so grateful for everything. The food is mind-blowing, and they put a lot of effort into making this a good experience on all levels. Hope to be back soon on one of your cruises!

Pros: Fully vegan experience

Cons: More activities on board would be even better, No empathy in how they treat their clients

Cruise number 2 - hopefully many more!

We attended the 2019-20 new year cruise on the Danube, which was superb. When we saw a cruise down the Mekong, we knew we had to book- a part of the world where animal products are used as a base for many sauces would be tricky to navigate as a vegan.

We hope to book more cruises. Dirk is an excellent organiser with a brilliant sense of humour and we always meet interesting people on these small river boats. The mix of activities and time to relax is well proportioned. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting a vegan tour! #sailawaytheveganway

Just returned and our second cruise was even better than the first!

We did both the pre-cruise extension and the Majestic Egypt 2024 cruise. It was amazing from start to finish. We enjoyed our accommodations, the service, the food (wow!) and the other passengers. This was supposed to be our last big family trip (after our last big family trip to Portugal and Scotland), but we enjoyed it so much that we plan to take many more cruises with Dirk and vegan travel. The hotel was beautiful and then our three cabins were luxurious as well. We packed in almost every site that you could possibly see in Egypt and yet we never felt rushed. It is also wonderful traveling with the cruise director/owner as he is very attentive. He even helped us get an extra cabin so that our sons could have their space. We look forward to the next cruise and extension.

Pros: Eating exceptional vegan food with ease, Traveling with like-minded people, Exceptional accomodations and service

Cons: Takes time to get answers which equals lower costs

Nice cruise. Rude treatment

Firstly, I commend Dirk (the owner) for his contributions to the Vegan mission! I had joined the south of France cruise in 2022. Upon arrival at the departure point we were advised that the boat had broken down at another port. It had been repaired but was behind schedule. So we were bused to that town. This was handled well by the staff, although we did lose a day. For the most part, it was pleasurable and peaceful cruise. I had met great people and made a couple of friends. The ports of call were generally small towns and enjoyed my time exploring. There were a few terrific tours as well. As for the food on board, the dinners were also terrific. Fabulous actually! However, the rest of the food was so so and I skipped it.

This is where things went sour:
That said, I registered for the 2024 Danube cruise. As life would have it, it turned out that I can’t go. So, 2-½ months ahead of schedule I advised Dirk that I must cancel. Dirk sent me an invoice for the amount I had deposited plus an additional couple hundred dollars. And, When I debated this, never have I been met with a such rude matter of fact response (by Dirk himself). “This is not a charity, this is a business”. There was no offer to apply my deposit towards a future trip, No offer for a refund should he book the cabin to someone else, and certainly no empathy for my situation! I’m dumbfounded by Dirk’s lack of business acumen toward customers.

Obviously and sadly I do not recommend Dirks Vegan cruise “business”. Nor will I ever again recommend his “business” to any of my hundreds of vegan friends around the US.

The same happened to us, with a slight difference: my partner had an accident 8 days before the cruise, he was in hospital, and the insurance of my bank card told us they will reimburse. But absolutely 0 empathy or any gesture from Vegan Travel, despite it being our third cruise. So disappointing.

Unique experience

Being on a fully vegan cruise was a bucketlist items for me, and I'm so happy I was able to do it on the river Rhone this fall.

The quality, taste and quantity of the food were beyond expectations, the crew was very polite and helpful. My fellow travellers were also extremely friendly. Even though I was travelling alone, I didn't feel lonely for a second.

I can't wait for my second cruise with Vegan Travel.

Pros: The food was amazing, The atmosphere was always very nice, Very good value for money

Cons: There weren't many on-board programs

Superb

We booked a New Year vegan cruise a few years ago and it was fantastic. The boat was well organised and our room was very clean with a great view. Dirk was always around who made sure everything was running smoothly. There were lots of excursions and daily activities available, and also areas on the boat to rest and relax. We met lots of lovely people from around the world.
Finally the food.......what can I say? The food was incredible!!!! We were treated to a plethora of amazing high quality food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and afternoon tea was available every afternoon offering wonderful cakes. There was so much to choose from and plenty for everybody on board, we certainly did not go hungry! We were very impressed with the standard and presentation which was consistent throughout the trip.
Well done Dirk and team!!!

Vegan River Cruise

We completed our first vegan cruise a few weeks ago and it was a magical experience. We enjoyed a week cruising on the Danube River visiting 7 beautiful cities. The ship was gorgeous and so comfortable, food was amazing and plentiful, staff and fellow cruisers were lovely. We highly recommend Vegan Travel and Cruises. Looking forward to our next cruise with them, hopefully next year!

Pros: Completely vegan including food, beverages, toilet, Affordable price range
