Great food and overall experience - Edit
Really great food and atmosphere. The yakitori was one of the best vegan meat dishes we've ever had. The owners were very welcoming too. Definitely recommend. There is limited seating though. We arrived a bit before 5:30 and only had to wait 5 minutes or so.

I don't understand the hype - Edit
I arrived right when they opened at 5:30 and waited around an hour to get seated. The food was okay but definitely not worth the long wait. It wasn't particularly memorable, staff was nice and super efficient though

This is a fully vegan restaurant that seats only 7 people. We had to queue for about an hour to get in, but it was worth the wait. Absolutely loved the food here.

7 seat izakaya, all vegan. Small and personal. Saved my day. Currently does not take reservations, if full there is a queue outside.

Luxury Shojin style meal - Edit
The place was so popular, we waited for one hour and half to eat in. They have only about 7 seats.
Read moreI expected this place is more casual because they are called “Izakaya”, but the menu wasn’t like Izakaya at all, it was more like luxury Shojin place to me.😄(Only Yakitori looks like Izakaya)
Everything was very delicious:)
But I’m not sure if it worth waiting for this long to eat shojin ryori at this place, there are other places which serves vegan shojin ryori without a long que 🙈

Excellent Experience - Edit
The food here is incredible and the atmosphere is so chill and enjoyable. Definitely recommended visiting on your trip. A meal probably takes around 40min to 1 hour, I would say it's worth the wait. Such a great business to support in Kyoto

Delicious and Feels Authentic - Edit
Had a great time here! It really is only 7 seats and by the time I got there (right at 6pm on a Saturday), there was already a line. I waited about 40 minutes to get in, but it was definitely worth it.
Read moreI got the standard course which was just the right amount of food for me (8 small courses) and everything was beautifully presented. It definitely felt like the most authentic Japanese cuisine I have had so far.

Very special meal - Edit
Had dinner with my husband and expected to have to wait, but we were seated within 20 minutes so I’m pleased - we arrived before 6 and it was already full, but once inside we didn’t feel rushed.
Read moreThe food was exceptional! From what I can tell now, they only serve Shojin ryori inspired dishes and we shared the large meal set. We probably could have had one each because it was so delicious! The soy yakitori and yakiniku were so flavourful, as was everything else. The sake lees cheesecake was unbelievable. The people saying it was nothing special need to tell us where they usually eat lol.
I have never eaten in such a small place before but it was an absolute pleasure, it felt very special.
Pros: Delicious EVERYTHING, Amazing staff, Intimate setting

Slightly overrated in my opinion, but still geat food. - Edit
Probably the smallest place I've eaten in my life, 6 or 7 seats and - also due to a certain hype - you'll have to wait unless you come here at 18 or even before and you'll feel the urge to go immediately after to let the guys outside take your seat. But the food was great, although I was still a bit hungry afterwards.

Cons: I love izakayas but this was probably too small.

Good food, but full of tourists - Edit
The food was good. Gluten free was difficult though and you need to expect long waits. Also, there were only foreigners eating here.

Loved this place! The yakitori skewers and dumplings were some of our faves. It is a tiny place so you need to get there early or face a long wait outside.

So fun and so good - Edit
I love this place! One of the best meals I’ve eaten in Japan, and it was so much fun to get a real izakaya experience. I’ve been to other izakaya but just for drinks and some boiled edamame so it felt great to have the full experience in Kyoto. The sake was excellent with heavy pours. The food was delicious, especially the soy meat skewers. I don’t know how they did what they did with those but honestly if it weren’t a vegan place I might’ve been afraid it was meat!
Read moreIt’s worth the sometimes long wait, but the wait can be brutal because they have only seven seats. They open at 6pm. We wanted to get there when they opened but we ran late and when we arrived at 6:20 it was already full with two other parties waiting. Fortunately the one ahead of us gave up. We got in around d 7:25.
There are signs everywhere that ask you to try to limit your stay to an hour if people are waiting but not everyone really held to that. Most groups did leave in around that time frame though (75-ish minutes?) so if you’re in the queue, counting parties ahead of you and figuring out how long it will take if everyone takes an hour can give you an idea of the wait.
Or, you can do yourself a favor and show up outside around 5:30 or 5:40. It will be better to know you’ll be seated in 20-30 minutes and just wait than to queue for an hour! You’ll be glad you put in the extra effort. Since they don’t take reservations this is absolutely the right move.

Traditional Japanese food made vegan - Edit
This was our first encounter with local restaurants in Japan and we had a great experience.
Read moreThe restaurant is a traditional Izakaya, meaning a very small room with only few seats at the counter. Keep in mind this means long waiting time before being seated: we had to wait about 1.5h standing in a line outside.
Nontheless, we loved the genuine experience! We ordered the tasting set, so that we could try many different dishes. Everything was really interesting and delicious!
Pros: The genuine feeling, The possibility to try many different small plates
Cons: The long wait

incredible experience - Edit
after being unsuccessful in dining here for many nights during cherry blossom season, i finally lucked out one night by total chance! got inside and tucked myself into the small, 7-person dining restaurant that is nijiya. upon viewing the menu, you can see several options a la carte or the set meal- go for the meal. everything came out relatively quickly and with care. flavors were 10/10 and i particularly liked how my extra serving of nasu turned itself into little anime eyes on my plate to make for a happy surprise. everything was incredible, 10/10.

Disappointed - Edit
We tried going to this restaurant and unfortunately we’re not able to eat. When we arrived the line was very long, so we checked at the door and it said it closed at 11pm. We arrived at 9:15 and they saw us standing outside and did not say anything, so we stayed in line. At 9:45 when some clients left and we walked in to seat they said it was closed and they allow the last customer to come in at 9pm. This is not stated anywhere, their page on instagram says 10pm and on google, here and their own sign at the door says 11pm… they did not apologize for the mix up, just sent us away. We found this very disrespectful because by the time we left there other restaurants were also closed and we had no other alternatives. It might be good but this is no way right or ethical. It felt like they made their money for the day and shut the doors because they wanted to.

Cozy, delicious, moreish - Japanese food done beautifully - Edit
Initially I was very confused about the entry - I heard it booked up very quickly and there was a list. So my partner and I got there early, put our names down, spoke to the lovely lady who worked there who suggested we come back at 6pm (when they opened) to wait. We did so, and waited approximately 50 minutes for a space to open up inside. I should mention, they only seat 7 people. Just prior to us being ushered inside, our order was taken and were served as we were seated. We also ordered extra after we finished as it was so good! Obviously not ideal for big groups, but a lovely and unexpected vegan option from Kyoto. Please visit (be prepared to wait, but it is so worth it!), enjoy, and eat well!
