May not be Vegan - Edit

This is a charming little Buddhist restaurant in an area without many veg options. And as little noodle houses in Taiwan go it's one of the better ones. However, as is often the case with Buddhist restaurants, the owner advertises it as "vegan" but it may well not be.

As the previous reviewer noted the sign reads "vegan: no meat, egg, onion or garlic" - basically exactly what Buddhists consider "vegan" (even though the official government labels required for packaged products get it right). The owner of this restaurant is a devout follower of a Chinese Buddhist group popular in Taiwan, so it's highly unlikely that she'd go to the effort to avoid dairy ingredients, but as she serves mostly simple, traditional foods she may not use any either. Any mayonnaise (referred to in a previous review) should be treated as suspect (as this is one of the most overlooked "vegan" foods in such restaurants) but otherwise it appears to be vegan by default.

During my visit she was preparing a large tray of wheat gluten, which is generally vegan, and I didn't see any other fake meat on the menu, but if there is any it's highly likely to contain diary products (statistically speaking).

Please don't let this put you off going, but just don't be confused by the name either: it's probably just because 'vegan' is shorter than 'vegetarian' and most Buddhists don't bother to understand the difference between the two.

Pros: cheap & cheerful

Cons: not necessarily vegan, despite the name!

Vegan - Edit

A vegan friend went here recently and said that their English menu says they don't use any meat, eggs, garlic or onions, but it says nothing about dairy. She also said that they had something that almost certainly contains a lot of mayo, though she was told it was milk free.

For the sake of clarity, it would be good if the restaurant updated their menu, if they are indeed a vegan restaurant.

Awesome little vegan place - Edit

Delicious and inexpensive. It’s a pretty small operation, with a few tables inside and outside. Service is friendly. No english on the menu, but there was some English spoken whenever I went. While I was staying nearby I stopped in almost every day. Highly recommended!

Pros: inexpensive, delicious
