I'm addicted, so delicious!!!

I love this place, it's a veg oasis in the middle of a street full of big name designer labels - ho hum, yawn. The food is very good, lots of taste and healthy as can be. Very large servings and friendly service. If he's there, say hi to William the asian owner, he takes a lot of pride in this restaurant. For take away or quick sit down meal, I highly recommend it.

Pros: Tasty, Fresh, Clean as

Cons: No free money, No free beer, No free food

The vegan options aren't very exciting

I popped in for lunch and found that all the things that I would have wanted to try was vegetarian not vegan, which was REALLY disappointing.
The lady was really nice but I felt rushed by her when I was studying the menu above the counter, as she kept pointing things out that I might like. I ordered the Char Kway Teow, and realised afterwards that I'd had it before, and was equally unimpressed last time. It's nothing like a traditional CKT, in that it had a slight sweet chilli flavour. Another guy's combination noodles came out, and it looked and sounded much better, I wish I had ordered that instead.
The dumplings had a great texture, the filling looks like tofu mince and diced veg, but it really only tasted of the garlic chives in there.

Pros: quite cheap

Cons: the vegan options aren't very exciting, Char Kway Teoh a bit sweet

Delicious!!!

Pretty much everything is vegan. I had the pumpkin curry and chickpea & potatoe masala and brown rice. It was very tasty! I don’t really like spicy food but i decided to try the pumpkin curry and it was just perfect.

Pros: Friendly staff, Lots of vegan options

Cons: Not 100% vegan

A gem on Chapel

On first impression, Veg Out Time looks like any takeaway and in fact probably does more of that than seated meals, but once we got into the food - boy, was it amazing! Loved the hefty samosas and all the options available. We definitely bought more than we could eat and the leftovers were just as good the next day. Highly recommended for a quick, delicious and value for money meal.

Pros: Cheap, Delicious, Fast service

Love this place!

I have been coming here for many years. Sad the Fitzroy and St Kilda ones shut down. Great value and great taste. Yellow mushroom and tofu is my go to.

Fresh generous and cheap!

Delicious, cheap and fresh. Mostly vegan, a couple of dishes are vegetarian. Great range of fake meat (bbq pork, kung pao chicken etc). Pad Thai and kung pao chicken particularly good!

Very nice food. Not a buffet 30Dec19

I had 2 choices n brown rice (green veg curry & tofu n mushroom curry) for $12.90.
It was very nice. Way too much tofu and too little mushroom, however very tasty. The veg curry was great. The vegs weren't all mushy and over cooked. The brown rice was cooked perfectly. They have tap water in jugs, fresh juice for $5. Most dishes are 12.90. The mock meat dishes are 15.50. Also dim sums, samosas. They have aircon fan.. Great for the 40° day when I was there.
All dishes do have sugar tho.
I enjoyed the food and felt satisfied with my dish.
I got a 1 hour parking 250m way easily (there were others closer but I wanted shade due to it being a 40° day.)

Pros: Good food, not overcooked, Pleasant atmosphere, Generous helping

Cons: Too much tofu and not enough, mushroom in the tofu/mushroom curry

Cute restaurant on busy Chapel st.

Wide selection of pre cooked dishes ready to go, or dishes cooked to order.
I had the tofu and spinach with brown rice absolutely delicious 😊😋
Most dishes gluten free too it seems.

Pros: Wide choice , mostly gluten free , reasonably priced

Cons: No hot drinks/ tea

I love Veg Out Chapel Street

I eat here regularly. Delicious food, quick, eat in or take away. Can choose from the ready made dishes.....I like getting the three choices and brown rice. There are also lots of delicious dishes to choose from, displayed on the chalk boards. Well labelled Vegan or vegetarian dishes. Most is suitable for Vegans. The servings are large and I feel like I have eaten a healthy meal after eating here. Extra sauce options for those who want chilli sauce etc for more spice. The staff are lovely and always remember us and the dishes we like. The owner/ chef often comes out and says 'hello'. Normally busy with regulars, either eating in or collecting take aways. I think the number of regulars who eat here says a lot about the food and the staff. Highly recommend it.

Pros: Delicious food. , So affordable. , Lovely staff.

Cons: Small cafe space with limited seating.

Average

I had rice with three curries- chickpea/potato, tofu/sweet potato and dahl. Rice was well cooked but not perfect. Curries were all lacking flavour, I'm not even convinced there was any spices in there. The chickpea was tomato based and just tasted of tomato, chickpeas were a bit too hard for my taste. Tofu was coconut creamy which with the richer flavour of the sweet potato saved it but there was still not obvious spice and I only got one bit of tofu. Dahl just tasted of lentil but was well done otherwise.

I don't expect hot curry in Australia but at least some (noticeable)cumin and coriander wouldn't go amiss. That said it was all entirely edible and just lacking rather than bad.

Woman behind the counter was friendly. It feels like a take away place with some seats thrown in the front so not really somewhere you'd go out of your way for a meal.

Serving size was generous but note especially big. A little over $10 for it is fair. No shortage of vegan options.

Given there's two falafel places and a Mexican within 30s walk (and loads more vegan options if you walk a little further), I doubt I'll go back. But if I somehow found myself with no other option I wouldn't really mind eating there again.

Fine when you're in the neighbourhood

I've been to this place (and the other VOT in St Kilda) regularly over the years and was last there three days ago. I find that it is generally good for what it is (quick meals from a bain marie) but not a place I would make a point of going. The food is consistent and clearly labeled (lacto-, ovo-, vegan, gluten-free and hot, medium, mild) but sometimes a little lacklustre. The bain marie items include around ten of a range of wet and dry curries and stir-fries and you get two choices with rice for atound AUD9.50. I've found it safer to stick with the counter food as the menu items (and there is a reasonably sized menu) have generally been disappointing when I've experienced them: laksa that is too soupy and tofu black pepper stir-fry that is way too dry. Sometimes I'll pop in and just grab a samosa or a curry roll, and they have other deep-fried items too. There are only plastic cups for water. I'll continue to come here but have realistic expectations about what I'm going to receive.

Pros: Consistent, Quick

Cons: Mediocre, Sometimes disappointing

Excellent Choice

Both the Veg Out in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda and this one in Chapel Street are fantastic places to indulge. Great locations to sit and people watch if you are into that. The bain marie contains so many tasty options - spring rolls, dumplings, fragrant Indian and Thai style curries and colourful stir fries. My mouth's watering...Very reasonably priced.

cafeteria style or order off the menu.

I arrived close to closing time but they still had the hot bar well stocked. I was going to take me order to go, but the rice and 3 dishes is only for dine-in. It was good I over all. Maybe a bit bland and not as warm as I would have liked it. I think I would order off the menu next time. The rice and 3 was $10.50 and most of the menu items were about the same price.
It was defiantly a good value for the money.
They have a cooler of water out so you can help yourself to water.

Pros: options, price
