Various pastries - Edit
In addition to simple breads, they have many Japanese soft breads like melon-pan, curry-pan, and nori-shio rolls! We know how difficult to find those Japanese original “soft breads” for vegan even in Japan, but here is one of the places we actually wanted!

5 Stars! - Edit
Great choice of baked goods, be it croissants, scones or sandwiches. We had a sandwich with pimientos, some roll with a kind of herbed vegan butter and a muffin with plenty of blueberries. The place is very well designed and you could even sit outside. Make sure to grab a shirt!

Vegan baking everywhere! - Edit
How fun to have so many baked goods to choose from!!
Read moreWe had the avocado toast, banana toast and potato toast (possibly the favourite of the 3, the seasoning and cream cheesey spread were so good) And we also shared the chocolate “croissant” type thing, not actually sure what it was but the chocolate was so tasty and reminded us both of Easter chocolate we used to have lol

Wow! - Edit
!!! FYI: There are 2 Universal Bakes locations in fairly close proximity to one another - the one near Setagaya-Daita station, and the other in Shimo-kitazawa. This one near Setagaya station had a wide selection of savory items, while the other was pretty much exclusively baked goods and donuts. !!!
Read moreWe tried the potato toast, avocado toast, banana caramel toast, and some kind of chocolate stuffed pastry, and literally everything was delightful.
The interior of the cafe was peaceful, the staff were friendly and spoke English well. Oh, and the Soy latte was super yum too.
The savory toasts were the highlight, and I will be trying in vain to recreate them at home haha.

Cozy place nestled in a cute neighborhood. Don’t see many vegan scone places in Tokyo, and this place does them really well. Great staff, who seem to know a lot of english.

Tucked away in the back streets of Setagaya, this little cafe and bakery has everything to offer! A wonderful range of sweets, savoury, and bread and a sit down option of French toast or soup. The coffee was delicious and the French toast was a great serving and not overly sweet. Additionally, the staff were so friendly! I am so glad we came here!

I can finally understand the appeal of melon bread!! Oh my god it’s so good. Lovely staff. Almost too much to choose from, but if the melon bread is in stock- get it.

Delicious and so much savoury choice 😋 - Edit
It was difficult to choose what to have, but everything we tried was delicious, and very fresh tasting. We got three of the flat breads - pizza, sweet onion, and potato & mushroom curry - all were very good, I think my favourite was the onion. Got the vegetable focaccia and it was nice, but if you're only getting one thing, I'd say the flatbread is better. My partner got the almond croissant (apparently only available on Wednesdays) and it was very good! Coffee was also great!

Great Vegan Bakes - Edit
This bakery is on the second level of a cute enclave of little shops and restaurants. I tried the mini donuts, lemon glazed doughnut, cinnamon roll and burger. All so so good! Except the cinnamon roll which was very dry, we couldn’t finish it.

DELICIOUS bread and soup - Edit
This became one of my top recommendations for anyone coming to the Shimokitazawa area. They have limited seating, you might need to wait for some time to get the table. My friend and I went there for Sunday breakfast past 9 am, and luckily it was not as crowded as we thought it’d be.

A must! - Edit
What an amazing fully vegan selection of sweet and savoury. So happy we stumbled upon it and we wanted to try everything (so we ordered a second time and got some more to take away too). Come here hungry and you won’t regret it! Possibly my favourite find on this trip. Staff are very friendly too.

Heaven!!! A must-go - Edit
Everything was soooo good, nothing else to say. Heads up, they bring out diff things for breakfast and lunch so make sure to hit both! Close to the Setagaya station (or walking distance from Shimokitazawa) and very peaceful to sit there and stuff your face.

Good to have options, nothing stood out - Edit
Good place to visit if you're in the area. We tried 4 different savoury things and found all 4 to be a little lacking. They were definitely not bad, just not amazing. We felt the price for the baked goods was good, the price of drinks was expensive (but fairly comparable to other places in Japan). Good to have the option, however we would not return as there are other options.

Delicious - Edit
Delicious sweet and savory breads, and everything is vegan! It’s not the cheapest, and seating is limited (just two tables inside and a few chairs outside). But everything is delicious, and there’s a nice park to eat in about 5 minutes’ walk away. Service was very friendly. #Veganuary

This was the best oat milk latte I’ve had in Japan. Strong and flavourful! Also had the mushroom toast and sweet potato toast, definitely recommend! We got some apple pastries to have at home later too.

Diverse Selection of Pastries - Edit
Shimo-kitazawa is the perfect spot to have a 100% vegan bakery in order to stock up on all your favorite pastries and treats.
Read moreThe moment you walked inside, you could just smell the bready goodness from all of the fresh options they had lying in front of you. Everything is marked in Japanese and the staff are happy to explain what each item contains to help you narrow down your options.
I went with a choco bread where they smeared a hazelnut chocolate spread right in the center of the buns, a delectable matcha donut with red beans inside, and an apple muffin which was perfect on my flight back to the States.
While it was all delicious, everything did seem a bit pricier at ¥500 on average for a baked good. That seems to be the price you pay if you're paying for vegan items in Japan it seems.
There was a small dining area but it was filled up by the time I arrived mid-morning.
Pros: Variety of pastries
Cons: Pricing is a bit high
