Good Comfort Food - Edit
Went there as out of towners. They have a few veg choices. The day we were there they had the veg chili and BBQ Seitan Sandwich. The other choices were simply Boca Burgers or Tofurky Kielbasa heated up.
The sandwiches were pure BBQ - fatty, sloppy, yummy. Strictly comfort food. The sweet potato fries were what you would expect.
We would go here again on another "must have comfort food" day. There is no seating inside, but outside had tables. It is on a neighborhood street, so follow the directions carefully.
Pros: Comfort Food, good hot sauce, fresh made
Cons: greasy

the price is right! bbq seitan is great...sweet potato fries delicious...the fake cheese tainted my first experience, but stay away from that and you're set
Pros: cheap, big portions
Cons: horrible fake cheese

this place is fabulous. - Edit
i had the BBQ seitan sandwich, with a side of fries and vegan slaw. all very tasty! however they had TONS of vegan options and i can't wait to go back and try them all. VERY casual. also: united BBQ doesn't throw out their old oil, but they donate it to newport biodiesel. their delivery cars are smart cars. the counter service was REALLY friendly.
Pros: lots of vegan food, well priced menu, ethical/responsible business practices
Cons: no boothes (high stools)

United BBQ = vegan paradise! - Edit
Shortly after United BBQ had first opened, I'd written a review indicating that vegan barbecue was a pretty tough sell. I felt compelled to revise my review, because United BBQ has added so many wonderful vegan options to the menu since they first opened. My personal favorite is the Tofurky kielbasa sandwich with grilled peppers and onions, homemade potato chips, and coleslaw. I also love the vegan seitan tamales, the vegan stuffed potato boats, the brown rice with wheatberries. The United BBQ folks have the best of intentions, and I'm so glad that they've made vegan options a large focus of their menu. Now... If they would only make their cornbread with a vegan recipe! Be sure to patronize this great little gem in Fox Point. The Boston Globe travel section recently named it one of the top 10 barbecue joints to visit in New England.
Pros: many vegan options, delicious food, great neighborhood feel

Great Food - Refreshing Change - Edit
Being from the South, whenever I see a sign for BBQ, I assume that not even the vegetables are going to be vegetarian, so I was pleasantly surprised to see United BBQ listed on this website. Unlike the previous reviewer, my wife and I were impressed with the quality of the food, and we'll definitely be back soon.
I ordered the BBQ seitan, my wife got the veggie chili, and we split an order of sweet potato fries. We also got a mini pecan-pie (1 serving) to take home. I liked the texture of the seitan - it was solid enough to stand up to being soaked in sauce but not too tough. The fries were lightly seasoned (probably just salt) but thin cut and crispy on the outside. Your taste in seasoning may vary, but the quality of the frying was top notch.
My wife said the veggie chili was fantastic. It came with a piece of cornbread. It wasn't as good as homemade (but what is), but it was better than most. I prefer my cornbread to be more light and fluffy, so this was a bit denser than I liked. However, my wife said that it was the perfect density for eating with the chili. It also wasn't overly sweet, which is a common problem with restaurant cornbread.
She also said the pecan pie was excellent, and she's looking forward to trying the veggie chili potato boat on our next visit.
Finally, a note about the sauce: As any connoisseur of BBQ knows, there are a wide range of sauces, and each place has its own recipe which the owners and their fans know is the best, and no one else's is quite right. My own tastes are toward more mustard/vinegar and less sweet, whereas United's tends more toward the sweet and sticky. Still, it's no sweeter than the standard sauces you'll find in the grocery store, and it's much tastier than those. But given the wide range of different BBQ preferences, it's not really the sort of thing you can take a random reviewer's word for. In any case, for a vegetarian with a hankering for BBQ you can't be too choosy about your sauce - especially in New England.
I would echo some of the previous reviewer's comments: It would be great if they would experiment with adding other veggie meats to the menu, and you should definitely give it a try.
They do have a few more veggie options, and I suspect the sides are vegetarian, but I didn't ask. You can see the menu here:
