CLOSED: Unicornio

Given the fact that vegan options do not exactly abound in Portimao, I just had to pay this place a visit. The food was good enough for me, but the portion was somewhat scarce. All in all, a restaurant worth a visit as long as you have no choice.

A truly fabulous little place with a friendly and dedicated staff. We ate here once in February 2009 only to find it closed on our next visit to Portimao in October. In October 2010 we walked past one evening and noticed that it had re-opened so couldn't wait to go back the next day. We were not disappointed, the magic is still here. They are predominantly vegetarian and I don't understand why some fish dishes are served. I think this may be to attract the Algarve locals whose diet is strongly fish-based. A 3-course vegetarian lunch is only €7.50 and can be easily made vegan. Leek and potato or tomato soup, a selection of dishes served with potato and lentil curry and popadum followed by either carrot cake or pecan pie. The vegan dessert was mango fruit salad. The motto of the restaurant is 'Creative Cooking' and I am very impressed. It's not gourmet, but it's prepared with care so all the flavours complement eachother well. Definitely a must when in Portimao.
