Hippy-vibe, laid back, raw-vegan

Good raw food for a cause!

We felt so lucky to be in Durango on a Tuesday when this cafe was serving lunch. It’s only two days a week. There is a set menu made of ingredients that are available that season or day and it was delicious. Today was a fresh salad, avocado soup, Asian cabbage taco and some killer truffles. Everything is from their garden a few miles out of town and the goal is to educate about wild foods and health. So cool. Plus, meals are by donation. Suggested donation is $15 per meal. Worth it. There’s also a CSA and small nook where you can buy the founder’s books and takeaway treats. Such an interesting concept. Would def come back if I return to Durango.

Pros: Set menu so no tough choices, Delicious, Good cause

Raw, vegan prix fixe lunch

This place is located in the back of a home in a residential neighborhood. Seating is outdoors on the shaded patio in good weather, next to an herb garden.

The "suggested donation" cost of the meal is $15, plus tip -- cash only!

TLR offers a fixed price menu, featuring a green juice, a green salad, a soup, an entree and a dessert. All guests are served the entire menu. Sometimes they post the day's menu on social media, but mostly it's just a leap of faith that that you'll be surprised when you show up.

I found the food to be very enjoyable. The banana-strawberry sundae they served for dessert was AMAZING. I loved the nori rolls (stuffed with seeds and microgreens, topped with a savory orange sauce that reminded me of a citrus salsa). The salad greens were picked the same day they were served -- ultra fresh. The parsley-zucchini-cashew cream soup seemed a little mild (almost bland) to me, but I think it was supposed to be a cleansing course between the salad and entree.

It takes some planning since they're only open two days a week, but it's worth supporting someone doing something interesting and innovative!

A hidden gem in Durango!

I love Turtle Lake - for their mission, for their founder (Katrina, what a sweetheart!), and for their food.

You can only get lunch there on Tuesdays and Fridays, so be sure to put it in your calendar. They are not open for breakfast or dinner - or on other days.

They serve the healthiest vegan food in the 4 Corners, focusing on locally grown and organic live foods. You will feel great when you leave! Light, energized, and satisfied.

Pros: exceptionally healthy food, prepared with love and awareness, you'll meet great people there!

Cons: very limited hours, some items have honey in them
