Delicious fine dining at a reasonable price

Troll is a trendy, upmarket spot right by the train station in Trondheim. They do a set menu each day; either 3 or 5 courses. Both are the same amount of food, but with the 5-course you get to try more flavours. Just let them know you want the vegan version when you book in advance.

We went for the 5-course vegan menu, and everything was absolutely delicious. We started with a salad with sundried tomatoes and sweet pickled red onion, then had deep-fried cauliflower with kale chips, marinated carrots, rocket and balsamic dressing. After that came a tasty aubergine lasagne in a rich tomato sauce, followed by a creamy cauliflower soup with carrot crisps. Dessert was a blueberry sorbet with cranberry jam, banana chips, fresh fruit and edible flowers.

Portions were decent and we actually left feeling full — not always the case with fancier places! Great choice for a special night out or if you're in the mood for something more adventurous than what Trondheim typically has to offer.

We paid 698 per person and think the price is pretty reasonable for the amount of food. I'd definitely come back again.

Cute place, decent food

Troll is located in a cute old building just next to Nidelva. We went there when they had a special offer, a five-course meal for 400 kr, which is a bargain. Anyway, the usual menu is 600 kr, which is also not bad. They can make both the five- and three-course meals vegan, and they change the menu every day (I don't know if they change the vegan menu every day though).

The first dish was beetroot tartar. Very tasty. The second was a soya and mushroom 'steak', which was tasty but way too salty. The first main was a mushroom soup based on coconut milk. Again, tasty, but too salty. Exactly the same goes for the second main, which was seitan with veggies. The dessert was an apple and ginger sorbet, which was very tasty.

The food here is really good. However, I would expect more from a high-end restaurant. Especially disappointing that most of the dishes were salted to death. Still, I would recommend people to come here and experience it. Hopefully the salty food was just a one-time incident.
