Pretty good - Edit
Went for a spontaneous visit to the old trippy taco which I haven’t visited since my uni days. Serving sizes are small however flavours are still as good as I remember. I had the nachos made vegan. The vegan cheese is still super cheesy which I really liked. Will be back.

Smaller serving size than expected for the price - Edit
The place is small and unassuming and can easily be missed. The menu has vegan options, but most of the food is vegetarian by default and you need to ask to make it vegan. The serving size was smaller than expected for the price. There is some outside seating. The tofu taco I had was fairly tasty but it was small.

Bursting with flavour - Edit
There is too much good stuff on each taco. This is not a bad thing, just grab a fork when you’re done to eat your tasty tasty dropped fillings.

Excellent nachos - Edit
I’m a bit surprised I haven’t reviewed Trippy Taco as I’ve been coming here for years, but it’s been a while since my last visit. We sat outside on a lovely autumn night and you order at the counter. My partner and I shared the nachos and the tofu asada burrito. I thought the nachos were particularly good but I also enjoyed the burrito. It was filled with tofu, but I wasn’t sure of the vegan cheese replacements in this one. I like that you can opt to have it cut in half so you can share. We also had a plate of churros with chocolate sauce which were delicious.

Pretty average - Edit
My vegan friend recommended it and I was pretty disappointed. Got the original burrito and the tangy fries. Whilst the tangy fries was tasty enough, the original burrito was pretty much just salad in a burrito. Not even guacamole or any seasoning (to my knowledge). I don’t know if the other items are better or more inventive but I was hoping for a more elevated taste at a specialised vegan Mexican joint- especially when mad mex and Guzman have vegan options of their own that felt more flavourful. If you come here, maybe try their tofu asada or something that sounds a bit more inventive
Read morePros: Good location, Tangy fries are yum
Cons: Not worth price , Bland food, Ingredients lacking

The thing that Trippy has over Guzman and Mad Mex is that it doesn’t have death on its menu and isn’t a multinational chain 😊

The business is vegetarian, it does have death on its menu, and it should have become vegan a long time ago. This should not be eligible for 5 star ratings.

Yes you’re right you re: Trippy Taco, @BreakfastKlutz. It was remiss of me to refer only to the slaughter of animals for their flesh rather than also considering the death that occurs in other parts of the industry, even if I was just making a brief remark. I also agree that any business that is not vegan should not be eligible for five stars. This is the least acknowledgment HC can make to animal abuse and death. I think you’ll concede some non-vegan businesses are more problematic than others. My point was more that sometimes it seems HC reviews become so focused on cuisine that the consideration of animal ethics goes out the window.

I ain’t trippin’ - Edit
It felt like forever since I’d been at Trippy when we came for lunch recently, even though once upon a time I was here every weekend. They’ve cleared a lot of the clutter out of the dining area and removed the pokey tables that used to be beside the counter. It looks better. We ordered the breakfast quesadilla, which I don’t think I’d ever had before. While it wasn’t bad, the scrambled tofu didn’t have a lot of flavour and I couldn’t detect the purported vegan cheese. The vegan nachos were as delicious as ever, with a healthy dollop of smooth vegan sour sour cream as well as the guacamole, so you don’t feel too ripped off for being vegan, even if there is a vegan tax. Vegan cheese costs more, sure, but cafes and restaurants can cost equalise so vegans aren’t punished for their ethics. Melbourne’s first and now only veg Tex Mex eatery.

Awesome - Edit
Trippy Taco you were great! Really enjoyed our evening here, we sat outside watching the world do it's thing while eating our selection of delicious dishes. The only thing I wasn't really impressed with was the Breakfast Quesadilla, it was a bit on the boring side, but the rest of the food was divine. Absolutely loved the churros. Everything on the menu can be made vegan, but I wish it were all vegan, would save me double checking and triple checking that I ordered the vegan option 😂 Staff were super nice and great service. Definitely would go back.

Awful, tasteless, out of date - Edit
I remember going to Trippy Taco years ago and loving it. I finally made it back and was soooo deeply disappointed. It was like having a happy memory destroyed! Nothing had flavour, it was so plain and boring. So much was out of a jar or can, and not home made. The vegan cheese was like rotten plastic and I had to scrap it off everything because it ruined it.

It was also so expensive for what it was. I was shocked!
Would prefer to give one star, but this app forces a minimum of two for vegan places.

(Fever Dream Entry)
Read moreIt's high noon, the blistering sun beats down on your head and back, sweat beads on your brow and each step reminds you of the echo in your empty stomach. That ache reverberstes up your body till it clambers out of your mouth with a single sound 'trippytaco'.
You've stopped to catch your breath, though before you, a stand-off between Smith and Gertrude, and you don't have time to be caught in the cross fire. Side stepping the exchange you find yourself in a vibrant orange/yellow shack, the smell of victory, zest and fiery Mexican food.
You go to pick up the menu, though as you do your hands slowly melt through it, like a plastic bag catching the lick of an open fire. You try to move closer to inspect the illusion, though your feet have began to slump into the ground, soon followed by your knees, torso and chest untill nothing remains of you but a bubbling hot nectar, ready to be bottled and dashed on a freshly made mixed burrito.
Pros: Great value on the mixed burrito/hot sauce.
Cons: Hot sauce may cause fever dreams.
