Great tofu restaurant! - Edit
Eating at a tofu restaurant is a must if you're in Japan, and even more so if you're vegan.
Read moreWe booked the vegan menu when we made the reservation (on the same day) as by default they would use fish stock (as do most places in Japan).
The food was delicious and a good amount. A bit on the pricey side but so are most restaurants of this standing

Wonderful Service - Edit
5 stars reserved only for fully vegan/veg places, if I could give 5 I would. Service was phenomenal and everyone was exceptionally kind, I made a reservation and forgot to confirm the day before but they still honored it even though the sign on the door said they were full. Food was delicious, had the vegetarian service and I’ve never had tofu in so many ways. 100% recommend!

Make reservation in advance - Edit
Reservation is a must coz mostly they are fully booked. You can make the reservation in Japanese by calling them or through Japanese restaurants booking system.
Read moreTraditional restaurant w seating in front of the bar and a few (around 8 ) seats are also available in the back.
They offer only one fully vegan option for dinner. On the picture u can see the courses. Server assured me they r not using any fish sauce etc..
~ ¥20 000 for dinner for 2 w drinks
This is in my opinion a rare find in Kyoto if you're looking for authentic cuisine... I had an amazing experience😉

Delicious, little pricey, fun - Edit
This was a new place for us to try and we were very pleased. Their website clearly states they have a vegetarian set meal option that is suitable for vegans.
Read moreHowever getting here is a bit tricky if you do not speak Japanese. The website is accessible, but they do not respond to reservations via email. I tried twice, a month out and 2 weeks out. I had our concierge at our hotel place the reservation. The location is south of Yasaka shrine and easy to find.
We sat at the bar. It was fun because it looks like tatami but there is a groove for your legs, so a tatami style bar. I had never seen this before but it was very comfortable.
The courses were delicious. While our server could understand simple English and was very attentive, I wish I could have asked more questions about the dishes, which were beautiful and tasty.
You get a big boiler of water with seaweed and spices and they scoop fresh tofu into it. It cooks and you get delicious, fresh, mild;y seasoned tofu. They will constantly refill this magic tofu pot for you.
It was fun when the answer to "what is this?" is always tofu. They really were very creative in many of the dishes. My favorite was the eggplant sushi and the tofu sashimi. A little expensive when you add drinks, but it was a lot of fun. I'm vegan, my sister can't do dairy or red meat, and no one got sick eating to our heart's content here.
Pros: vegan options, delicious
Cons: reservations in Japanese over the phone
