Indigenous fine dining with imagination and love - Edit
What a treat to have such inspired vegetarian and vegan fare in meat land! While higher-end places in the Larnaca area make some plant-based concessions, these folks do it with imagination and love. Ditto for diners with gluten and/or lactose intolerance.
Read moreThey are currently (as of 20 September 2024) only open Friday and Saturday evenings, offering a 5-course set menu for 45€ (!), with optional wine pairing for another 25€. We overheard that they will soon offer only a 12-course tasting menu.
Local ingredients appear in fun and surprising preparations. Tahini, halloumi cheese, herbs, seasonal fruit and veg, and commandaria sweet wine all do things here you never thought possible. A mixed vegetable tavas with handmade pasta flecks and carrot-commandaria sabayon sauce knocked us out, especially paired with a Tsiakkas orange wine aged in commandaria barrels. The family owners' research into pre-meat-heavy Cypriot recipes and botany shines everywhere.
The setting is elegant but down to earth -- spacious with a few rustic trinkets on the walls. The view of the local tavern across the street and its parade of local cats entertained us almost as much as the food. Service is attentive, informative, and perfectly laid back.
My only very minor criticism was the third round in the wine pairing, an oversized red that was clearly meant to accompany the absent beef (substituted by okra) in the main course. A lighter, less woody red and/or the integration of some legumes in the main dish probably would have solved the mismatch. But it was delicious anyway. And of course I only noticed because everything else was divine.
If you are anywhere on the island, check this place out!
Pros: Amazing food, Fab local wine selection, Lovely, thoughtful hosts
Cons: It's not next door to my house
