I had just gotten off the bus from Taichung and was starving. After looking for a place to grab brunch near the Sanchong Stadium bus stop, I honed in on Tịnh Tâm Chay because it had been a long time since I had a good banh mi (i.e., Vietnamese sandwich). The staff member out front basically ignored me and went into the back kitchen even though I’d rolled my luggage to the first table near the entrance. So I asked the owner sitting near the back how I should order. If it were just me, I could just tell them verbally rather than marking up a menu.
Read moreI knew that I wanted a banh mi, but I also sprung for the spring rolls (越式生春捲): I was hungry enough! The menu item that I thought was the banh mi and tried to order was only available on Saturdays and Sundays (baguette with braised soup / 越式紅燒麵包). The thing is actually wanted was the 越式法國麵包. Good thing the other one wasn’t available; otherwise, I would have been a bit disappointed!
The banh mi was served in a plastic sleeve, which seemed a bit wasteful since they could have easily put it on a plate. The spring rolls came with peanut sauce with shredded daikon radish. The bread was perfect! And I curiously examined the mock meat that was used to replace the pork but couldn’t tell what it was made of. And the spring rolls were great, as well. I wasn’t afraid to tell the owner I’d be back again!
Be aware that it’s very Buddhist with lots of posters for meditation classes, CDs to take home for free, and one song on an endless loop.
Pros: delicious & authentic, great value, good variety
Cons: staff could be friendlier
