Delicious vegan-friendly Chinese-Malaysian cooking - Edit

The KL/PJ area has no shortage of Chinese vegetarian restaurants but some like Tian Pin stand out for the quality of the food, friendliness of the staff and value for money.

I went with two friends and four small dishes filled us up. We got the Bitter Gourd and Tofu Soup, Kam Heong Chicken, Kangkung Belacan and the Yam Basket. I also got a 'sit cha' (iced Chinese tea) which was made with a fragrant jasmine tea, unlike a generic black tea which is more typical at most places.

The soup was flavourful but light and clean tasting, with a generous amount of bitter gourd, tofu and mushrooms. The kangkung belacan was indistinguishable from the conventional dish of water spinach stir fried with shrimp paste. An absolute winner. Their kam heong chicken was very tasty despite being slightly different from the conventional version. Kam heong is usually a dry fried dish of meat, curry leaves, minced lemongrass and garlic, and other spices. Here it's more saucy and garnished with bigger slices of lemongrass. The end result is still delicious. The yam basket (mashed yam shaped into a basket a deep fried for crispy exterior, filled with crispy mushrooms, cashews and vegetables, on a bed of crispy rice vermicelli) was one of the better versions I've had of that dish.

It is worth noting that, while a lot of Chinese vegetarian dishes are vegan by default, it is always a good idea for vegans to check that there is no milk, butter or eggs in the dishes, especially ones with a gravy or thick sauce. Everything we ordered was vegan except for the kam heong, which we veganised by requesting that the butter be omitted. The kitchen will gladly make such adjustments to suit dietary specifications.

The restaurant is a mid-level establishment with air conditioning and table cloths, but everything is priced very reasonably. Certainly a very welcome find in Petaling Jaya. I'll be back.

Pros: reasonable prices, friendly staff, air conditioning

Chinese restaurant with some vegan options - Edit

This is a traditional Chinese Vegetarian restaurant, that offers lunch sets (rice/noodle + vegetable or mock meat) for around RM 7 - 10.

They also have a la carte lunches, and they do have some vegan options. Unfortunately the vegan options are not marked, but the staff seem knowledgeable regarding what is in their food (looks like a family business).

I tried the sizzling beancurd lunch set and it was quite nice, and the Szechuan soup that was spicy but otherwise rather unremarkable.

Open 10:00 - 15:00 and in the evening.

Pros: Tasty food, cheap

Cons: Vegan options not marked
