A Thip Of My Hat To Them

When it comes to Dubai, there is obviously nothing more iconic than the Burj Khalifa. This beautiful behemoth literally stands as the pinnacle of human architectural achievement (for the time being, at least), and millions flock in their droves merely to set eyes on it and its accompanying fountain show that lies at its feet. Why does this matter, you ask? Well, this restaurant is located squarely in the shadow of the beast and so close to the aquatic display that you could touch it (though not recommended) – a truly awe-inspiring setting for a birthday brunch.
Venturing inside, the ambience was that of peace, tranquillity and sophistication. It certainly wasn’t a shock to discover this was the case given the locale, but it was fully appreciated all the same. Not to be outdone, the staff too were more than equal to the setting; polite to a fault and as gracious as they were helpful.
The only missing piece of this grand jigsaw was the food; all would have been for naught if this crucial element was found wanting. Again, I harboured very little concern that food would be anything but faultless, yet still it was bliss to have my suspicions confirmed with the arrival of the first dishes. Obviously prepared with care and attention, the appetisers were clean, light and perfectly balanced. Even the Tod Mun Khao Phod – fried corn fritter – managed to be delicate and without a hint of greasiness. From here I would say that I moved swiftly on the main dishes, but that would be a bald-faced lie and serve only to glaze over the fact that I had umpteen rounds of the starter plates.
When I did eventually deign to press further on into the meal, still more brilliance was to be found. The red curry hit all the right notes in terms of spice and fragrant aromatics, while the tofu dish brought yet more heat as well as a glorious abundance of garlic and soy.
Knowing that my time at this meal was limited, I had to make the tactical decision to allot as much of it as I could to the dessert course – a move that proved fruitful in more ways than one. After demolishing several servings of the ludicrously additive mango coconut sticky rice, as well as a significant number of portions of the slightly divisive Thab Thim Grob (I, for one, love it), I was then presented with a slab of vegan chocolate cake. To my great surprise, rather than being a woeful replica of what a celebration bake should be, this one had all the hallmarks of the real deal and round off the meal perfectly.
