Serves meat, vegan options available. A traditional English pub in the centre also with accommodation. Will cook vegan dishes on request. Pub is open for drinks from 11.00 am - 11.00 pm. Open Mon-Sun 12:00-15:30, 17:00-20:30.
We have been here a number of times as we are big fans of Goats and Oats in Garsdale. The appeal is that there are three vegan options in an area with few. We tried the leeks on sour dough which was delicious; one evening we both had the Sag Aloo burger; great portions. The burger was decent but could have done with more seasoning. Another evening, husband had the Risotto which he said was tasty and I had the Sweet Potato and Chickpea curry. It was hearty but little flavour. Dessert was very good.
Despite the friendly service and atmosphere, I can’t give this place anything other than the lowest marks because the food just isn’t very good and is far too expensive for what you get.
They have one vegan starter - a very spicey but not very tasty leek-on-sourdough dish.
There’s a few vegan options for mains - a curry, a burger and a risotto. The burger was extremely tasteless, although had a decent texture.
We spoke to the waitress extensively about the menu as she was vegetarian and her boyfriend vegan so had tried everything on the menu which was helpful.
There’s several vegan options including olives on the ‘Nibbles’ section of the menu. The olives with bread, oils and balsamic isn’t labelled as vegan, but can be made vegan - just without butter on the bread. There’s also a soup available as a starter.
Three mains including a burger, curry and bolognese. We tried the burger and curry which were both nice. I was originally planning on ordering pasta which is what was on the online menu, but had since been replaced by the curry. It turns out the menu changes every three months with each season so don’t set your heart on one dish as it may be different to the menu in the pub!
No vegan desserts sadly, but overall a really cosy place with more options than I was expecting when planning a visit to the Yorkshire Dales.
Friendly staff go out of their way to make good vegan food - Edit
We went in on a busy Saturday night, without having booked. Despite this, they found a table for us after we'd had a drink by the cosy log fire, and then proceeded to go out of their way to tell us about the vegan options. On the menu, there are a couple of standard vegetarian options (bean burger and sweet potato curry) - my partner had the curry and said it was tasty. However, when I asked about vegan options (expecting salad and chips) the Head Chef actually came out of the kitchen to tell me what she could make me and ask what I fancied. In the end, I went for Mediterranean vegetables (tomatoes, olives, onion, garlic) on a bed of large field mushrooms. This may not sound very exciting, but it was cooked so well the flavours were delicious! Plus the portion sizes were actually sufficient for our massive appetites after walking all day.
I want to point out that this is essentially a traditional cosy British pub, with an open fire and good real ale, and that this is what we went into it for. The openness to veganism and vegan options were a bonus! The character of the place is wonderful and it is set in a unique and glorious landscape.
