Bring friends: Your fav food in a swanky new space

Wayward had been struggling on during the pandemic and offering take out, but still has not reopened for dine-in. Stay strong, Wayward! We love you!

The new location in a word: Swank. In three words: Swank. Spacious. Bright.

The Wayward for breakfast, yay! Awhile back when they updated their menu, I made a point to stray from my favorites (Biscuits Minimus, Lost Souls scramble and Very Veggie omelet -- maybe with a side of steamed greens and a cinnamon roll) and try new items. Every time we went, I ordered something new until I'd tried just about everything that would fit in my belly (the menu includes some very big, hearty dishes). It's great to have a place you can trust to experiment.

I can now report: It's all good.

In the new location, the Wayward has lost its edgy, self-serve diner-ness and added servers (nice, friendly!). We're already planning to bring more family and friends here — space will accommodate — and I can see us coming more often for dinner.

Gosh, nostalgia: I remember two locations ago my first meal at the Wayward. My mother-in-law actually found and suggested it. I had no idea such a place existed — an all vegan breakfast? The location was, well, rustic, but I was in awe of the menu. Vegan biscuits and gravy?! Wow!

Newly vegan, I was a little intimidated (don't fear the vegan!) but totally delighted.

Then, Wayward moved just south of U-District, to vegan-ville (Vegan Haven, Pizza Pi, Araya Thai), it became our go-to breakfast home. We started to run into friends here — impromptu meet-ups.

The new location — still not far from Vegan Haven — invites more people. It's bigger, brighter and less of a nook.

But you can still order anything you want off the menu with confidence. Fantastic!

The future is vegan.

Great breakfast

I’m a sucker for breakfast and a GOOD hearty vegan breakfast can be hard to come by! This place was incredible- we also are big time suckers for buffalo wings so we had to try those as well!
Did not disappoint

Tasty brunch!

I got the French toast combo along with popcorn chiggen and tempeh bacon, and some coffee. The coffee was classic diner-style, and the 'eggs' were shockingly similar to traditional diner-style scramble. I loved every part of the meal, although do note that the tempeh bacon is very thick and more like regular seasoned tempeh than something like thin chewy strips. (Still very delicious though!) The whole table liked sharing the chiggen- great finger food to share. Service was very nice and it was a great time.😄(PS: There is a great park nearby- was fun to go for a walk and then fuel back up here!)

My favorite spot in the city

I love the Mac attack, the pastas are good and heavy, the sandwiches are great (though some are a bit small). Very dependable and super good. Breakfast is amazing except I don’t really like the tofu scramble because it’s curried.

EDIT: after new management the tofu scramble is better now and though they dropped some of the menu there’s still so much to love and some new stuff. Love the Hot Hunny wings and the Albuquerque Crunchwrap and Chico vegan melt. Breakfast is better than ever. New management has made some noticeable improvements overall.

Delicious and Decadent

I had the chocolate chip French toast, and it was amazing! The place itself had a great, laid-back, and simple ambiance. Will definitely come back again.

My FAVORITE Restaurant. Period.

I have been going here for years,I even used to joke that there were wizards in the kitchen because the food was truly magical. Every. Single. Time. I lived in Bellingham a while back and would still make the trip down to Wayward Vegan Cafe at every opportunity I possibly could. Yes, I'm aware that it's a little over a 2 hour drive. Was the food really worth it? You're damn right it was. When they had briefly closed their doors and stopped even taking to-go orders.. I thought my heart would actually break. Something about the comforting, cruelty free food seemed to make all the troubles of the world melt away, so when I found out that they had reopened, my heart sang with joy again! So glad to see my favorite restaurant of all time still persevering through it all! Your otherworldly food has made a cult fan out of me and everyone I have had the pleasure of taking here 🥰 Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for the consistently fantastic food!

Love!!

We had breakfast here. I got the French toast with berry compote and my husband got the crunch wrap. SO good! We split a cinnamon roll too. The portions were so generous we were barely able to finish everything.

Everything is amazing

You get what you pay for, so it’s incredibly good. Vegan comfort food rules and I’m thankful Wayward does such a good job at it. Easy parking for the car oriented, easy transit access for the cool kids

Fantastic venue

Was so pleased and delighted with the Hillbilly Omelet, the staff and environment. We don’t have a purely vegan place where I live. So this was a great treat while visiting Seattle.

Pros: Great location, Healthy portions, Wonderful staff

Worth the trip

We flew to Seattle from Portland Maine. We stopped by Wayward Vegan after months of reading the menu. Portion sizes were huge. I had the Chico Vegan Melt. It was fantastic the fried chiggen was the best I have had to date. My wife had the club. Another well done sandwich. We had the cinnamon roll for dessert and we waddled to our next flight we were so full. All the staff were fantastic. Our waiter, Devin was fantastic. He was engaging and friendly. I would 100% come back here on our next trip to Seattle.

Good Reuben, Great fries

The Reuben meat was marinated thinly sliced tofu. I liked that it wasn't overly processed and it was much tastier than j expected. The fries were outstanding.

Ehhh

Good service. Efficient, friendly.
Decidedly mediocre food.

Also the atmosphere is… way off. Exploitative, even; a cafe run by non-vegans but playing videos of happy bunnies on a big screen like vegan is just an aesthetic to market to. Hope I’m mischaracterising what’s going on here since it was taken over by new management, but I reckon I’m not wrong.

Delicious and fresh but $$$

I had the veggie omelette and it was delicious. The veggies were fresh and the potatoes well done like I like it. It definitely is not a $ more like a $$-$$$. Our bill for one omelette and coffee was $30.

Pros: Vegan, Fresh, Friendly

Cons: Parking, $$$

We ordered via Toast this evening and were presently surprised by the taste and portion size! I’ve been to Wayward previously, and always had a fantastic service. The Club TLT is HUGE! You’ll be full ☺️

Pros: Good vegan options , Delicious food!, Nice to-go service

Oh yes! Wonderful!

Visiting from out of town we couldn’t wait to try this restaurant, it did not disappoint! Charming hip, is that a thing? Well it’s this place has it. The decor is eclectic, comfortable and clean. My husband enjoyed the Rueben and I had Wayward’s swoon worthy version of the BLT. The portions are generous. The service fast. The fries piping hot and crispy. The gentleman that waited on us was kind and took great care of us. If we lived here we would definitely be regulars!

Pros: Delicious food, Generous portions, Nice wait staff

Cons: More kraut on the Rueben would have been great!

Great comfort food breakfast

We went to Wayward on a Tuesday morning in June, and there were several tables of people eating dishes that looked great. We were seated quickly, and our order was taken quickly. We had a sunshine omelet with home fries and biscuits with country gravy. The sunshine omelet was outstanding! The biscuits were very good, too. The only thing we didn't love was the coffee. They only had drip coffee, and the soy milk for it was an extra charge on top of the charge for the coffee. The soy milk didn't dissolve smoothly into the coffee, unfortunately. Hopefully they get better coffee and better soy milk eventually or are able to start doing lattes. The food was so great that the coffee wasn't a big deal, though. We'll definitely be back to try more of the yummy items we saw others eating!

Pros: Excellent food, Quick service, Nice friendly environment

Cons: Didn't love the coffee

R.I.P. Wayward Cafe 😔

This used to be an awesome vegan cafe in the u-district that moved to greenlake and then sold to anti-vegans who hired anti-vegan chefs and gutted the soul and destroyed a beautiful thing.

The chef in the kitchen literally mean-mugged me as I entered the restaurant. He presented as like a prisoner who eats babies. This is not a happy vegan.

Prices are now jacked up 30% higher, the menu has been reduced to dumpy dust and the spirit of the cafe has been murdered just like what the owners like to do to animals.

My sever (a vegan) was incredible, but whomever owns this place has got to go gold-dig elsewhere, may I suggest a urianium mine?

The crunch wraps were still on the decimated money-minded menu, but they did not have crunchy tostasdas in them. What the heck?

What was left was factory meat and iceburg lettuce in a squashed burrito. Anything else reported in there was irrelevant because it did nothing for flavor.

For the love of Ed, I have no idea how they expect to stay in business after they've scammed all the former customers into coming into this hollowed out husk of a corporate greenwash nightmare once to learn that Wayward is dead and gone. My friend and I argued over who had to take the leftovers home, the burden of carrying them not worth the effort.

Really pathetic that meat-mouth investors think they can rip-off vegans. You have no soul. We can tell. You can't sell love when there's hate in your heart. It doesn't work and seeing this once beautofu cafe limp to it's death is so sad.

Needs Major Improvement. Step One, Go Vegan. Nothing you do will ever be vegan or even vegan friendly until then.

If I ordered a crunch wrap and it came out like that I’d return it 😅 that’s so sad they sold out. Can’t stand meat eaters trying to make money on vegan food when they don’t even know how to cook it

I miss the second iteration of Wayward (when it was on University Way). It was a smaller location, but the best version.

University was my Fav too. I thought there was first? But no?

geometric-noise

The first iteration was collectively run out of a converted house. There was a community bike workshop built onto the back side. It was still in the U district, located on a side street.
