Historic Gator Hangout, Lackluster Vegan Food

I want to give a fair review of The Swamp Restaurant in terms of both what the restaurant is and how it is for vegans. The score is more about the quality of food for vegans than a judgment on the restaurant's feeling in general.

The Swamp is a Gator-themed bar/restaurant on the campus of the University of Florida. It features walls decorated with Florida memorabilia, tons of TVs, and a big front yard seating area. It's obvious that when the gators are playing, this place would be crazy and a fun time. The staff was also extremely nice and it was a fun spot to visit - especially if you are a Gator fan or student.

In terms of vegan friendliness, The Swamp had some things going for it. They had a designated vegan option in the Power Wrap, they had a vegan hummus appetizer and sides, and the menu was clearly labeled.

On the other hand, the options were pretty limited for anything substantial. I went on a Sunday and the menu listing the power wrap wasn't available until 3pm - though they made an exception for dietary reasons.

The wrap was nothing special. The vegan chick'n was tough and it lacked any real flavor. The french fries were good though. If I went back, I'd probably try to adapt a salad to be vegan and get hummus and/or fries.

In all, it's a great place to watch any gator sports and hangout on campus. If you are a vegan, there is an option for you - but this place is way more about the Gators than food/a destination for a substantial vegan meal.

Pros: Power Wrap as Vegan Entree, Vegan Items Clearly Labeled, Great College Environment

Cons: Limited Vegan Selections, Food was Lackluster, Menu Restrictions

Specify vegan, and you're good to go

This spot is serving up some good bar food and is perfect for game-nights. However, coming here to catch up with a friend was a bit difficult in the loud setting inside. My power wrap was great with the seasoned soy protein and hummus to moisten things up. I was happy to see some vegan options on the menu. Be careful with the sides though as the seasonal vegetable may come with bacon!
