No longer serves vegan full Irish breakfast - Edit
Update December 2025:
Read moreNo longer has vegan breakfast on menu - apparently menu recently changed. We were not advised re other vegan options on the menu so we left. I did let them know I thought they should put it back on the menu. Downgraded from three to two stars.
Original review August 2024:
I've had a fair amount of vegan versions of the full Irish breakfast at this stage. At the Shire it was only ok flavour wise, but very filling as I made myself eat every last bite (as it cost 11.90). I was glad I had seen in a previous review that they were served their breakfast with dairy butter as I was looking out for it, and found the same situation. This is a real shame because it shows a lack of understanding of vegan besides as a money-maker for them, and puts into question the ingredients of all the other elements which a customer is unable to verify. Oddly as well I was served guacamole instead of avocado as was on the menu. I would recommend to hungry visitors in the morning in Killarney as it opens at 8:30am and all other cafes I saw on happy cow open later at 9am.

Fab breakfast - Edit
We have been to the Shire lots of times and it never fails to impress us! They have added vegan sausages to the vegan breakfast! Just enough to keep us going after 5k Parkruns!
Read morePros: Friendly Staff, Good size portions, Value for Money
Cons: They always serve portions of dairy butter on side, Jug of cows milk served with coffee, No Marmalade!

Food was good - Edit
2 vegan options for lunch: chickpea curry with rice or a falafel burger. I ate the chickpea curry which was delicious. A bit spicy, but just enough for me. If you're not into spicy things, don't take this. The rice was perfectly cooked.

I had high expectations of the interior. I thought it would look a lot like The Lord of The Rings theme, but not so much...
Pros: Friendly staff, Nice coffee, Good food
Cons: Door was open so all the bees and flies fly inside, No vegan pastries

Nothing fancy, but great - Edit
It’s a tiny cafe and bar within walking distance of several hotels downtown. Service was very friendly. There were only two vegetarian options, and I chose the falafel burger. It was freshly made, did come with a garlic aioli so it wouldn’t be vegan unless you requested that be left off. It was delicious and filling. Nothing fancy at all, but after a day full of walking and activities it was hearty and great as a vegetarian option.

Nice breakfast at the shire! - Edit
They have a vegan Irish breakfast option on the menu which was great! They also catered this for kids when asked. The only thing is that they also placed packed butters with the meal which weren't vegan. They also have vegan lunch/dinner options on the menu, such as curry and a falafel burger. The atmosphere was great and the staff was also accomodating.
