The Ship Inn - Edit
Busy, popular pub with people enjoying a drink. Seating inside and out. The pub has been around for many years so it’s good to see it still up and running and all vegan. Food however was just average unfortunately. I had the tofish and chips. Personally prefer crispy chips and the tofish was a very small portion. The tomato ketchup was also bright orange which is a new one on me!

What more do you want from a pub? Great beers, fully vegan menu including separate pizza menu. Great times playing too, super important.

Still standing and still vegan - Edit
It's been many years since I last visited The Ship so it was lovely to see it still standing and still serving vegan food. It didn't look like much had changed, looking a little tired inside. I had The Ship Burger which is described as 'House patty of walnuts, mushroom and turtle beans freshly baked bap, crisp lettuce, red onion, pickle burger sauce, house slaw and chunky chips'. I didn't enjoy the patty and I'm pretty sure that was served as a loaf at the sister pub The Carriage for Sunday lunch too. The bap was tasteless but the slaw was lovely and creamy and the chips tasty.

Great Vegan Pub Food - Edit
We had The Falafel, Nachos & Twice Cooked Chunky Chips. The Falafel was amazing, the nachos were nice but too much cheese sauce for my taste and I’d of preferred traditional tortillas chips) and the chips were excellent. Would definitely recommend, we were full otherwise I’d of tried a dessert, they had some amazing options like sticky toffee pudding, crumble and chocolate cake.

Not for me - Edit
Seitan roast dinner was not for me.
Read moreI found the seitan spongy and overly seasoned with herbs. The roast potatoes were old and chalky, and the leeks were gritty as though they’d not been washed prior to cooking.
The mash and the red cabbage were great but not enough to overcome the rest of the dish.
We also ordered the BFC burger which was very crispy/overdone and in need of a lot of mayo to compensate. Chips were great!
I would give the food 2 stars but as the venue is entirely vegan I’m giving 3. Will try again as all other reviews seem good and places do have off days.
Pros: 100% vegan food
MouthyMackem
I’ve had an off day here too where the food wasn’t up to it’s usual standards. I would way give it another go and hopefully you get luckier. I prefer the nut roast to the seitan, the tofish is nice too.

Me and two of my friends came here for a Sunday roast - the gravy and veg was delicious! One of my friends got the lucky tofu fish and chips and he really enjoyed that too.

Amazing 'fish' and chips! - Edit
I love that this place has a fully vegan menu. All the dishes sounded amazing but i went with the 'fish' and chips, it was amazing, served with crushed garden peas and tartre sauce - each element made this dish beautiful.

Cosy pub with classic food - Edit
This little pub is perfect. Looks and acts like a normal pub but all the food is vegan. All pubs should be like this in my opinion. Menu was very classic. I had macaroni cheese and my partner had a burger. Good chunky chips.

Odd times - Edit
The last time I ate here the food was great. The same goes for all the times before that. The one thing that stood out was the apparent lack of understanding from one staff who started boasting, with a huge smile on her face, about the farm over the road they have for children. Being an ethical vegan, I couldn’t help wonder why she’d want to say that out loud unless most people who eat there aren’t vegan. But a little sensitivity could have been employed here. I understand that most vegan places to eat are not necessarily owned by ethical ppl. Learning curve!

I don’t understand this comment, was she saying that the place over the Rd is a sanctuary or a farm? So the place over the Rd is ran by a vegan? Isn’t that a good thing?

Reasonable But Rudderless - Edit
'Proper' pub grub with other options available.
Read moreIt is a 'vegan-ish' pub. (The alcohol they serve is not all vegan, but the food is.)
I enjoyed the 'Fish' & Chips w/ Mushy Peas. It was excellent - although I expected more 'Fish'.
My partner had the Special (Rice Bowl) and thought it was delicious.
The Ship is located at Ouseburn; it is a little out of the way for some people - but it is still a popular place. I have read that it gets very busy here.
We went when it was quite quiet.
I was surprised at the waiting time - despite there only being a few people there. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and suggested that the food was just being freshly prepared.
However, the staff weren't welcoming.
The staff were absent - both physically and in spirit. It almost felt as though we were serving ourselves. Perhaps it was just an off-day.
We would still return for the food.
The Cluny (across the road from The Ship) is a good option, if you don't feel welcome here.
Pros: A variety of vegan 'pub food', Good venue
Cons: Unwelcoming, Slow service

The staff here are pretty rude tbf, I’ve been here on a few occasions so it’s not an “off day”

Excellent Vegan Pub Food - Edit
Excellent vegan versions of traditional pub dishes, including fish and chips, shawarma, and occasional other specials. Good selection of ciders and beers on tap, and a laid back atmosphere. If I lived in Newcastle, this would be my local.

Absolutely amazing food. It was a little pricey but the portion sizes are very generous. We had jackfruit shawarma flatbread with loads of salad, red cabbage, chillies and tasty sauces, Mac and cheeze and salt and chilli chips. Staff were lovely and I will definitely go back!!

Been waiting 1:30 mins for food - Edit
I’ve always really liked this place but recently the food wait times have gone beyond what is feasible for most people. Ordered food well over an hour ago, and after asking staff they said it is still coming. We can see food sitting on the side so think that the whole process could be a lot more efficient.

Impressed - Edit
Nice-looking place, great atmosphere and perfect location (a scenic walk along the river from the city centre). We got the chance to try the food last week and loved it. I had the flatbread and my partner a burger. Really tasty food in generous portions. Our only quibble was the price of a pint; we had one and then moved elsewhere for the rest of the evening, as we couldn't afford to drink as well as eat here.

We escaped the freezing cold weather and warmed up here. Best Sunday Roast we've ever had! Huge portion which kept us going for the whole day. Definitely recommend. The staff seemed a bit cold/a bit unfriendly, but the food more than made up for it.

Absolutely love it here, esp. in the summer chilling in the beer garden. Such a great atmosphere and 100% vegan menu, AMAZING. The food is aways so tasty- solid 10/10 every time. Love the fish and chips, cheesy chips and nachos. Sunday dinners are also a winner here.

quick lunch. - Edit
I don't think I gave the ship justice as. I was grabbing a quick lunch during working hours.
Read moreI went for the nachos, which were full of beans with a chipotle sauce. I would liked to have had a proper main, but time was pressing.
menu completely vegan, and some certified vegan bevvie! I mean over a quarter of the plate was picked onion, get some broccoli in it. Rice needed seasoning, a little, tofu was a bit disappointing but some heat came through in the end.

100% vegan pub - what more could you want? - Edit
This pub is situated in the coolest part of Newcastle, they sell a great range of drinks and an amazing, flavourful, delicous range of 100% vegan food. The menu changes often but they usually always sell great burgers, salads and Asian inspired dishes. The chips they do are the absolute best!

I'd go more often if it was more friendly - Edit
The food is great here, you enjoy every bites of it. Every time I go there I wonder why I don't come more often and the reality hits you in the face. The staff is the least friendly you can find in the area. They seem annoyed to be working here and make sure you feel it too. It's a real shame, the area is lovely, the food truly amazing and the choice of drinks really great.

Delicious Sunday Roast! - Edit
Been wanting to come here for some time- grew up in the NE but only come back here when visiting family now, and not for a while because of lockdowns. Anyways, have read the reviews and was quite intrigued as to what sort of experience we would have. I owned a vegan restaurant in Oxfordshire until recently so I appreciate what a stressful and uncertain couple of years its been. We were a group of 3, sat outside and were able to get menus for ourselves and order food and drinks at the bar. The choice of beers was good, and the food came quickly and was hot. The roasts are very generous, with loads of fresh veggies too- red cabbage, rosemary roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, celeriac and mashed potato too, The gravy was a triumph! So, so delicious, great service and lovely staff... Well worth the wait and will definitely be back! Great to see a vegan business thriving in these tricky times!
