We arrived to find pub mostly in darkness and closed Saturday evening. As it was raining we did not get out to see if any information. Disappointed

Amazing Vegan roast and dessert options - Edit
Choice of nut roast or mushroom wellington. Loads of vegetables and gravy. Very tasty, probably the best Vegan roast I’ve had in a pub/restaurant. Desserts are Vegan too but not labelled so make sure you ask! I had Biscoff cheesecake and it was delicious. Staff are super friendly and provide great service.

Vegan pub with meat options! - Edit
Lack of vegan labelling had me confused. But almost everything was vegan..so the roast dinners arrived and we were asked if we’d like more gravy - I said, yes please, vegan gravy. The waitress said, all the gravy is vegan! I asked which desserts were vegan and she said, all of them!
Read moreI visited on a Sunday. There were two choices of vegan roast; I had the mushroom Wellington which came with stuffing, loads of veggies and roast spuds. There were other choices like lasagne, tofish and chips or homemade pie. For dessert I had fruit cheesecake which I forgot to take a photo of as I was busy inhaling it. All my companions are omni - nobody noticed vegan gravy or vegan desserts! Absolutely great place, lovely staff.
Pros: So much vegan food, Homemade, fresh, delicious , Lovely staff

The Reality - Edit
The Royal Oak is a vegan restaurant with meat options, NOT the other way around. With this in mind please remember if we don't engage with meat eaters in a pragmatic and constructive way, we as Vegans will for the most part come across as single minded, belligerent and pugnacious tree huggers. (Try saying that when you have had 6 pints of Tonebridge vegan beer !).

What a great review and we are very happy that you had an enjoyable time with us. For transparency I acknowledge that you were unable to give us 5 stars due to restrictions imposed by this review site. This is a shame because the merit of your written review and photographs is not reflected in the rating. I hope the general public will realise this and not judge on the stars alone.

Pub run by vegans! - Edit
Pleasant pub in village of Dormansland, near Lingfield. There is a station nearby, so great for a country walk, a nice lunch and then a train home. Recently taken over by a vegan family. Meat is still served, unfortunately (they are hoping to win over the meat eaters to the vegan menu). However, lots of vegan things. I had a really nice lasagne plus a knickerbocker glory. Very friendly staff – the chef even came out to check that we were happy with the food.

We are from the Royal Oak and thank you for your review. We remember your visit and enjoyed you and your custom. We note your comment regarding the 'cons' and as a business if we could survive on the income of Vegan Customers we would not serve meat. We are based in the so called high street (The Royal Oak, a Hairdresser and a post office) of Dormansland which is a lovely village, however it is not easy to promote vegan food in farming communities or countryside villages and whilst there appears to be a number of vegan groups in the area, we have found some negativity from them, as a result of our selling meat products. This attitude is counter productive and serves only to open the doors of our establishment to non-vegans. If we were busy with vegan customers to the extent that they out-numbered the non-vegans the business would become 100% vegan in a relatively short time. Given that we serve more vegan food than most pubs and restaurants it is not surprising that we feel the emphasis on our business description provided by Happy Cow should be that we serve "Vegan Food, meat options available" . In any event we thank you very much for the review and look forward to seeing you again.

Impeccable food and service - Edit
Very rare to have such great vegan options in this area. The family who run this establishment are very friendly and vegan themselves which offers peace of mind when ordering from a mixed menu.
