The vegan option reviews looked very good so we stopped here on the way to Southampton. We were asked to look at the Greene King app to check for allergens - but unfortunately the app does not provide ingredients for each element of the meal. After 30 mins of downloading and searching through their app, I was struggling to work out what i could eat in terms of potatoes. It was Sunday and I'd have liked either boiled potatoes, mash or roast potatoes with my pie. When staff say 'I think it is vegan' - it's a red flag. It is or it isn't and should be clear in the app. One staff member was patient and helpful but another was very rude and getting annoyed about the time being spent asking questions. I wanted to walk out. Not so easy to up and leave with an elderly mother in tow. Finally ordered the pie with a jacket potato. Basic boiled potatoes, mash, roast potatoes were not available to vegans. When the pie arrived there was no gravy - yet the other review showed it was served with gravy. It was a pleasant pie - but if you are like me and like your food swimming with gravy and fresh veg you'd be very disappointed. A pie needs gravy!! We ordered the vegan dessert only to be served it without any vegan ice-cream (which was part of the dessert). It tasted a tad burnt but it was supposed to be caramelised peach. No compensation offered for no gravy and no ice cream. They just give it to you in the hope you'll eat it anyway. I was very glad to leave.
Conclusion - If you aren't a liker of gravy and happy to eat chips with all meals then this place would be 5/5. At the time of our visit, there was no vegan option included in the Sunday meal offer which I felt was a bit discriminatory.
I don't want to put off vegans going to this pub as sometimes a place needs more visits and more reviews to force a change. Also good to see check for consistency (staff knowledge / food availability) as no doubt it will vary. Hopefully Greene King will improve ready for Veganuary.
I had the mushroom and ale pie which was lovely! Really nice crispy pastry with a really tasty filling, great to have several main course options! Dog and family friendly
