Super tasty and a gem of a cafe - Edit
This is a fiercely independent cafe and locals flock to it: be prepared to queue a bit at most times. There are only really two big vegan dishes: one is 'peacado' and the other is hummus based. Both are served on toasted sourdough and come with fabulously tasty embellishments (think harissa, pomegranates, peashoots etc). I alternate between these on visits and never tire of them - they're that good! They also offer a generous veggie cooked breakfast.
Read moreTheir coffees and teas are fab and there's usually at least one vegan cake option.
Inside, the tables are tightly packed: you'll be aware that meat eaters are nearby.
The outside space is in the morning sun, or under an awning on wet days, and it's a good place to watch the hustle and bustle of the much-loved 'Bishy Road' stretch of indie shops that define this area of York.

Very nice but not many options - Edit
We had the vegan breakfast burger and "smashed peas" on toast with extra mushrooms. Both were delicious and decent portions! You could tell they were quality ingredients and expertly seasoned.
Read moreHowever they were kind of the only options on the menu for vegans (apart from vegan fry up), and not very obvious either (just one line under the non vegan version saying could be made vegan, which meant it wasn't clear what it would actually consist of). After we'd ordered the waitress did say that they make a lot of the sauces and mayos vegan by default so other things can be easily veganised but it wasn't clear which ones they would be. I reckon they'd be amenable to making something tasty if you asked for something different but I'd rather they just had their vegan options upfront and clearly described.
They also had a big section in their menu about how they'd stopped serving avocado for sustainability reasons but I feel like if they actually cared about sustainability they could have considered stopping serving beef first!
Pros: Quality ingredients , Decent portions , Beautifully cooked meals
Cons: Not many vegan options, Maybe kind of green-washing with the no avo thing, Vegan options not described properly on menu

Growing veggie menu - Edit
This has for a long time been a favourite cafe in York. But with the chef's/owner leadership there is a brilliant range of meals that cater to vegan and veg friendly tastes. I am partial to their Indian style meals, particularly dhal and rice.
Read morePros: Good range of foods, Friendly staff, Reasonable prices.
Cons: Always busy. Expect to share a table
