Flavor, spice, balance, atmosphere - Edit
I had the panang green curry bc of reviews and I loved the flavors and the heat. I got it mild to high spicy. I appreciate that it was not a heavy coconut cream that I experience in curries outside of Thailand. It was a nice balance of broth and coconut. Ok portion- I saw the pad Thais and those plates were massive. I loved the small intimate space up on the porch where the restaurant is located, very friendly space. Moderate price.

Quality food - Edit
Really enjoyed our two meals here during our stay. Recommend the Penang green veg curry.

You may well need to book in the evenings. We were told, 1800 and 1930 sittings are generally what they work to, with kitchen closing at 2030, which you should be aware of.

Curry night - Edit
Delightful curry that they claim is vegan (I’m always skeptical, but hey) … their pad Thai is more “straightforward” vegan. Appreciated a good feed!

Good food, but slow service and no vegan protein - Edit
Finding a vegan-friendly place for dinner on Utila was proving to be difficult. But after finding the Vegan Utila Facebook group, I saw that The Pelican posted there every day with their daily specials, which always has a vegetarian/vegan option. When we went, the specials were curry with rice or kung pao with rice. We got the vegan option of each and were served lots of veggies in flavorful sauce with a scoop of rice. There was no vegan protein option available for these specials unfortunately, but it included a mix of veggies, broccoli, and some peanuts/sesame seeds.
Read moreThough the food was good, there were some downsides to the place. The restaurant is upstairs and open-air, so in September the hottest month, it was pretty hot though there were fans going. It also took a long time to get our food and service was not super attentive. Also, for a place that was pretty expensive (240L for two entrees and one beer) I was surprised that they don’t take card, only cash.
Overall, this is a really good dinner option and would definitely go back. They are open Mon-Thursday 11-1:30 for lunch and 5:30-8:30 for dinner and Friday 11-2. Closed weekends.
Pros: Vegan specials available every day, Flavorful food
Cons: Cash only, Long wait
