Odd coffee shop

Update: Visited again in 2024 and VE options are more clearly marked. I asked if a pumpkin latte could be veganised and had a slice of cake with it. They were both delicious, around £7 total.

Original review:
The name ‘Oaty Goat’ makes me think vegan. It’s not quite a fully vegan coffee shop unfortunately, but lots of the menu items come vegan as standard. The labelling of these items is pretty poor, but we asked at the till and turns out there’s vegan pasties, hot chocs, ice cream and bubble waffles (and more).

I think the owner has this idea that labelling everything vegan will put off non-vegans, and they’re not wrong, but that does make it difficult for us. I thought the things I tried were tasty and I would return. My advice is to just go straight to the till and ask the staff what options are available for you.

Hi Shannon,
Thank you for the thoughtful feedback.
You are quite right, we are not an exclusively vegan or vegetarian establishment... our ethos was to try and offer something for everyone, whether that is dietary preference or dietary requirement. The name Oaty Goat is based on the legend of Khaldi (a goat herder that originally discovered the coffee bean when his goats were eating the berries and going hyper :-). The Oaty bit.... probably our favourite milk to have in any hot drink
We have recently added plant based ony options to our menu and have tried to call them out in a much more obvious way. Our latest additions are a fishless fish finger bun aswell as offering our popular Oaty Goat Breakfast plant based using Moving Mountain Sausages.
Our bubble waffles remain vegan, and we offer more vegan ice cream flavours than dairy.
We do though need to make it clearer on our menu which of our dishes can be made plant based, so we will incorporate more of this when we redo our menu's again
Once again, thank you for taking the time to feedback
Nick and Sarah

Do not recommend

Like other comments suggest, ‘the Oaty Goat’ would be a great name for a vegan cafe! Contrary to the name, the menu lacked many plant-based options. My fruit scone arrived frozen and my coffee was disgusting. In hindsight, I should have asked for a refund.

Pros: Friendly staff

A fair selection of vegan

A fair selection of vegan options, more than most cafes, vegetarian options as well. Staff were eager to ensure dietary needs were met and made several checks regarding ingredients. Food was good

Pros: Staff were helpful, Cafe was clean, Some vegan options

Horrible experience

When I went here it was some time ago, but when I see this place on FB it ticks me off for several reasons and I feel compelled to write a review. Fortunately I do not see this place advertised much and here they only have one review so far. I think that's the positive thing to focus on. That and the fact that while they have a good ratings on FB and Google only about 12 people in total have left those since they opened.

Why I don't think much of this place. Firstly before they were given the go ahead to open a lot of locals put their foot down and demanded to have a vegan eatery and no more eateries stinking and peddling flesh.

I personally think the proprietor was told he had to add vegan to the menu and make it even look vegan. We the vegan community were "used" as were the sentient beings this place offers up as food and beverages.

The manager sold me a vegan cheesecake which was infact butter filling loaded with crunchy sugar. The cheesecake was an insult to vegan cuisine and sent out a message that vegan foods are disgusting. When in actual fact vegan cheesecake tastes like dairy cheesecake and in a lot of cases better.

Then the manager went on to tell me he had been vegan. Really!? So he's been vegan which we all know he never was and if he had been part of the vegan community he would know that's fighting talk being hugely offensive to actual vegans.

So I politely just let him talk. Apparently veganism made him very unwell. Second lie he's spreading to his customers.

The more I listened the more uncomfortable he became as though he had expected me to lash out when he initially insulted and lied about veganism.

So then he went on to lose his confidence and start telling me how dairy's bad for you and his little girl is dairy intolerant so hence the oaty in oaty goat. Which I do not believe. I believe his child is intolerant because that makes sense, but to name your cafe after oat milk and tell everyone it's your favourite after telling people it's because of intolerance is strange. It doesn't sound ambitious to just name your cafe after something like that unless you are vegan. So he was bored and opened the fridge, saw the oat milk and said just call my new business after that and a goat. Then he peddles pig flesh in a bap.
Oh and he said the other reason he stopped having compassion is because he had kids and it became to complicated to source a vegan lifestyle 🤔 he wasn't making much effort to be vegan then.

Stinks of pig fat.

Pros: Nothing , Nothing , Nothing

Cons: Owners hate veganism , They do not know how to produce vegan foods, smells of burning sentient beings 😢🤮
