Huge portions and plentiful choices

We had the skillet and French toast. Mammoth portions. The food was decent but not delicate. Plenty of choices on the menu though

They're Back! Elevated Vegan Comfort Food

The Modern Vegan SD is finally back open (with safely-spaced indoor dining!) and they are better than ever! We've been anxiously awaiting their return, so we checked them out on their first day after reopening.

The menu is massive and full of so many amazing things, it would probably take fifty visits to try everything. So where to begin? We tried...

Vegan Fish Tacos - Three (hard to believe it's not) fish tacos on corn tortillas with slaw, drizzled with Green Goddess dressing and a house red sauce. For all the omnivores out there, these are better than the real thing, super moist, not fishy, crisp and packed with flavor. Warning, this dish might ruin all other fish tacos for you.

Buffalo Chicken Ranch Wrap - Grilled chicken, buffalo sauce, sautéed mushrooms, and white onions, mozzarella, lettuce, and ranch dressing, stuffed inside a spinach tortilla. The key here is the vegan chicken, it's grilled instead of fried, so it's tender and not at all greasy, making it the perfect base for all the grilled onions and melty vegan cheese. This is vegan comfort food, or honestly even just comfort food, at it's best.

Breakfast Zoodle Bowl - Zucchini zoodles topped with tofu scramble, sautéed tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, peppers and carrots, then finished off with melted vegan cheddar, salsa, vegan sour cream, and green onions. It's light and refreshing but the cheese and sour cream make it feel so decadent, plus the salsa packs a ton of flavor. This one is so much greater than the sum of its parts. Breakfast of Champions... or any other meal of the day.

Unbelievably delicious (and deceptively healthy) vegan food, some of the friendliest service we've found in San Diego, and now, a full bar... you've got to check this place out! We'll be back and we might even see you there.

Great food! We enjoyed the food as much as we did in their Las Vegas location!

The Queen burger is so legit, tastes super good and it’s a generous portion size. I also enjoyed the breakfast burrito and the penne primavera. Soooo happy there’s a California location! It’s back open, even though google still says it’s temporarily closed during Covid.

Pros: Amazing vegan food, Gluten free options , Large portion sizes

Average vegan food

The restaurant is a nice spot in North Park. The inside reminded me of an IKEA food court but I liked the minimalist style. I was overwhelmed by the large menu in what looked like a hundred different options, and the waitress didn’t offer much help with her recommendation. The food wasn’t bad but it also wasn’t great. I was there for lunch and I ordered the Chick’n Salad sandwich (one the recommendations of the waitress), which turned out to be watery and soggy. If you know good vegan food, you will immediately know that there are better options in San Diego.

Pros: Good location

Cons: Overpriced, Food is average, Not a place to sit and relax for very long

Vegan and nonvegan paradise

Let’s just start off with the menu, it’s, well, expansive to put it lightly. If you can’t find something that appeals to you on their massive menu, you should probably just stick to eating dry oatmeal for remainder of your miserable existence. Starters, breakfast 24/7, soups, sammies, burgers, wraps, platters of unholy goodness, bowls and smoothies Oh my! Then, there are the portions...come hungry...or with the munchies because you’re gonna need them. You get so much more than what you’re paying for here. I ACH meal is like two and that’s great of us because we love midnight munching on food this awesome. With so many great choices it’s hard to say what our favorite is, but here’s a few: corndogs, chick’n n waffles, waffle stack (any of them), breakfast spuds, lobster stuffed portabella caps, shakes, dessert, curry, it’s all so damn good lol.

Pros: Huge menu, Giant portions, Super friendly staff

Cons: Little costly for the area, but so worth it , Entrance is hard to find

Biggest vegan menu

My husband and I frequent this restaurant! It has a little of everything, from salads, Buddha bowls, pastas, thai, burgers, hot dogs, chicken and waffles! You will definitely find something you’re craving on this menu. We always bring our own containers because dishes are large in size!

Pros: Lots of options , Large portions

Cons: Some items can be expensive with upgrades

Terrible Service and Terribly Managed

I’m actually really sad that I will probably never return to TMV in North Park. My husband and I first tried the Vegas one last year and LOVED it, so we were so excited when they were opening up in SD. The first time we came for dinner, the waitress had a bit of an attitude, not just with us, but every table she was serving around us. But the food was amazing, so we went back next time we were in SD and let me tell you—it was one of the worst dining experiences. I was so disheartened by it. Weirdly, the same rude waitress from our first visit also waited on us for this breakfast and again, she wasn’t very polite. Every step of the process took sooo long—from waiting to be seated, to getting our order taken, to receiving our food. Two people that were sat down before us waited so long and their food never came. I overheard that the waitress forgot to put the order in, and they left so angry. When my simple breakfast of tofu scramble with veggies came, it came without, and you’ll never guess, THE TOFU SCRAMBLE. It was a plate of vegetables and toast. Same exact thing happened to the table next to me (she ordered the same thing). We had to tell the waitress, who half-heartedly apologized, and then we waited forever for a side of tofu come out. And it was such a small amount of tofu! By that time, I just wanted to leave. I couldn’t believe their service was so bad. My husband and I have since been back to the Vegas location and it’s as good as ever, but this one? Never again.

Pros: Food is good (if they get your order right)

Cons: Long waits for EVERYTHING, Less-than-friendly service, Expensive for the bad experience

Pricy

Went with a friend and we split the Holy Hell desert. It was a decent sized portion for dessert, although steep for $12. The peanut butter cookie dough was delicious and we couldn’t quite figure out what the ice cream was made out of. It was delicious, just considering we came from another vegan establishment where $12 was the price of my entire meal there, I think it’s a bit too pricy. I could see myself coming here again to give the regular food a try, if I took home half and ate that as a second meal (burgers looked like big portion from what we could see if table next to us). Overall, I liked the large variety of food options and I would come back to try it, just not very often due to the price.

Also, the waitress we had was really nice. We got seated right away and got helped in a timely manner.

Cons: Very expensive

Good and bad - mixed feelings

The menu is a bit overwhelming and kind of all over the place as far as genres, but the Mexicana breakfast tacos I finally settled on was delicious. The side of Mac And Cheese was the worst vegan Mac and cheese I’ve ever had. Had a weird and strong chemical taste. I took one bite and then told the waitress it was bad. The restaurant refused to take it off the bill. So, end result, most food was really good, the waitress service was great, but the restaurant management deciding to charge a customer for seriously bad food wasn’t a way to get me enthused about this place. Especially at these prices.

Pros: Food was good , All vegan

Cons: Expensive, Restaurant management policy

Expensive but worth it

Appetizers for 12$ and entrees start at 17$ but sooo worth it! Had the pulled pork sandwich and my bf tried the breakfast burrito. Big portions, definitely would go again!

Trying to Do Too Much

When I first saw the menu, I was overwhelmed by all the enticing options. I've been here twice, however, and have discovered they really can't deliver on their promise. I think they should simplify their menu, paring it down to where they can really shine.

The first time I went, it was for breakfast. I was really hungry, so I ordered a smoothie and waffles. The smoothie was very thin, and almost had the consistency of juice. Smoothies are supposed to be thick and frosty, so this one was an overpriced disappointment. Their waffle menu is mouth-watering, with so many creative options for toppings. Unfortunately, the waffles are like bricks, and you get three of them. If you can't master a light, airy, fluffy waffle, don't offer them, much less with a million different topping options.

The second time I went, it was for dinner. I ordered a chocolate shake and a burger. The chocolate shake had the same problem as the smoothie -- very thin. It was like drinking chocolate milk, only with a stupidly high price tag. The burger was pretty good, but they used a Beyond Burger that I could make at home.

I would be willing to try a third time, because I'm sure the menu has some hidden gems on it. I just don't relish slogging through all the bad stuff to find them.

I also wasn't crazy about the f-bombs painted on the wall (leaving out the vowel doesn't make it better); I brought my mom here, after all.

Pros: all-vegan menu

Cons: thin shakes and smoothies, heavy waffles

The biggest menu ever!

A bit over whelming with how many choices this place has!!!!! We tried the nachos, chicken and waffles, and cookie dough ice cream dessert, everything was really good. Tons of space, perfect for big parties.

Great tasting food, not necessarily healthy

This cute, modern eatery (think IKEA) has an extensive menu. I highly recommend it with the caveat that the focus is American comfort food and flavors. Essentially, they have mastered the art of fake meat here:hamburgers, hot dogs, deli sandwiches. For breakfast they focus mostly on tofu scrambles and waffles, including (fake) chicken and waffles. For the healthier minded there are small Buddha bowl and salad sections as well as some gluten- free items.

Pros: Gigantic menu, Gigantic portions, Friendly service

Cons: Price range. $12 appetizers, $15-20 per plate

Yummy in tummy food

Went to the one in Vegas and was excited to see it here in San Diego. Hubby had the portobello steak and I had the fried chickn with extra gravy. The only complaint was that it was understaffed. The poor server worked 120% to sit people, bus, serve and cash out. The cook even came out to help serve. I hope that this does not diminish their success as it so good.

Pros: All vegan, Serves alcohol, Wide varied menu

Cons: Poor server was by herself.

Expansive Menu

I did not totally dislike the place. Found the food just bland - needed to season the food. I asked for hot sauce and all they carry is sericha. I would go back again, but I would have my arsenal of seasoning with me.

Pros: Expansive menu

Cons: Bland- no flavor

Meh

I had high hopes for a tasty vegan breakfast, but it wasn’t as tasty as I had hoped. The food is good, not great. And over priced, although the portions are generous. There are simply too many options so it feels like there isn’t a goal of having any particular specialty, rather than to just make food. It’s a very sterile, environment; about as welcoming as a high school cafeteria.

Severely Understaffed

I came in on a relatively lazy Friday afternoon. I saw maybe half the tables were occupied. They had one waitstaff doing everything. I was acknowledged by the waitstaff, waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated, and then left.

The curry is AWFUL

Not worth the money. It’s extremely expensive, and the portions are massive. One meal could easily be shared across 2 or 3 people. The food is poor quality. I could tell that the veggies were frozen and the fries were likely not made in-house. Don’t waste your time and money!!

Pros: Bug menu

Cons: Expensive, Poor service, Low quality food

Awful experiences

Do not waste your time or $ here. Like all the other consistent reviews about awful service , we’ve been here 3x and it just gets worse and worse. The first time was great !! The second time the service was awful, food is usually good so that’s why we came back a third time. Each visit shows the place emptier and emptier , at dinner time there were only two tables there which proved to be too much for tori to handle (so much so that the entire hour we were there waiting for our to go order- despite only having two tables to serve because no one comes here, tori was incapable of cleaning trash off two other tables which was sitting there the entire hour we were there). The table behind us , although they praised tori, they had to get up themselves and serve themselves their own drinks and silverware a total of 5x while we were there observing them. It took 5 min to be seated (in an empty establishment ), 15 min for a drink order to be taken, 15 more minutes to get the drink and another 10 minutes to get a spoon for the hot tea that was by then, cold). Serving portions are also as inconsistent as the service has become. The first time the serving sizes were HUGE, second time matched (we’ve ordered the same orders each time among other items), and the third time was about 1/2 of what we received the first two visits (maybe because it was take out ? which means if you order take out - expect to get half of what you get when you dine in). It speaks for itself that this place was completely empty at dinner time , tori is incapable of handling even an empty place by herself. When brought to the attention of TMV they defended their establishment instead of humbly acknowledging that this review is consistent with all the other awful reviews they already have and continue to get. Save yourself $ , especially time, and your sanity and check out Donna jeans or even the Carl’s across the street instead.

Pros: Big menu

Cons: Awful service, Portions inconsistent each visit, 1 hour to get your take out

My belly is happy! This place is excellent!

We like to use the Happy Cow to find new places to eat when we’re out of town. The Modern Vegan looked good in the app and it did not disappoint! I had the Reuben and my wife had the meatball sandwich. Wow! Just wow! Fresh and messy and finger licking good! Looking forward to trying a variety of their offerings.

Pros: An amazingly large menu, Great variety, Comfort + healthy food

A casual Vegan Oasis

The atmosphere is so casual inclusive that my significant other and I didn’t even realize we had arrived at the location right away when we saw the letters “TMV”!
The stuffed avocados 🥑 with the coconuts flakes were amazing and flavorful!! Will be back with a larger appetite!

Pros: All vegan, Large menu, Friendly and fast service

Massive menu!

Wow. Just wow. They have a Cheesecake Factory sized menu! This place is awesome. Any vegan restaurant that has mac n cheese, biscuits and gravy, jalapeño poppers, and pad Thai is a-okay in my book. I don’t know what some of the other reviewers are talking about. Why would you go to a comfort food restaurant and complain the food is not healthy enough?! That’s like going to a Thai restaurant and complaining they don’t have tacos. They do, however, have salads and smoothies and açaí bowls. They have a massive dessert menu too. Deep fried banana bread? Hell yes! I also don’t think it’s expensive. Seems very comparable, even a little less than restaurants in AZ. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. She gave me all her recommendations when I asked. I will definitely come again!

Pros: Huge menu, Substantial portions for the price , Very friendly servers

Delicious, beautiful presentation, and good portion sizes

The food tasted amazing and was presented beautifully. Definitely check this place out. The only thing is that it’s a bit pricey. But, the portion sizes and quality justify the higher prices in my opinion.

Cons: Expensive, Some food is underseasoned
