Great comfort food - Edit
Greasy, hearty, and good comfort food. Lots of items in the menu with a variety of flavors. So cool to see an all vegan restaurant and I’ll def be going back!

Great place, Great Food - Edit
Hello All
Read moreWas there (TMV) for lunch today. I was happy to see another vegan restaurant in the Detroit area. Tried the cauliflower starter. The cauliflower starter is TMV most popular dish. For my main dish I had a fake fish sandwich.
Service was good and I was very happy with the food. The menu has a lot of dishes that sound great.
I am looking forward to eating there again.
It is easiest found in front of the Emagine Theatres. Next time I will see a movie and have dinner at TMV.
Pros: good food, lots of choices on the menue.
Cons: The 304 address is not seen form main street.

Simply Terrible - Edit
We entered the restaurant at 6:10 PM with one occupied table and two servers. We were greeted promptly and shown to our table. We gave a drink order for three milkshakes and received them within 10 minutes. We placed our order at 6:20 PM. Two other parties entered the restaurant and placed their orders. At 7:25 PM our waitress told us it would be 10 more minutes. 10 minutes later she informed us that it was her fault, but she never placed the order. The other tables had already eaten their food and exited the restaurant. We were served cold, bland, way below average food around 7:45 PM. The tofu scamble had no flavor, the mac and cheese was cold and tasted rancid with hard bits of what was supposed to be faux bar-b-q meat, the breakfast burger had no flavor, the Philly cheesesteak had no flavor. It was really gross food. It was probably the worst vegan food I have had over the past 25 years of being vegan. The bill came to just under $200 for a family of four (including two kids) and we left two hours after we entered. Someone please bring back Inn Season. (P.S. Happy Cow forces a review to give at least two stars, but this place is a zero star establishment).

Needs to be Half-Price or Twice as Good - Edit
Almost didn’t stop here because of the reviews about bad/slow service, but have to say our waitress was very attentive and our food came out pretty quickly.
Read moreUnfortunately, it was very bland for the price. The jumbo shrimp and fries were good, but fried food is hard to do wrong.
The Louisiana chicken was a small, flavorless portion on a large, unappetizing bed of wet mashed potatoes with an overpowering taste of almond milk or similar. The side of slaw had no flavor whatsoever—I hate waste but couldn’t finish it.
The Phillie cheesesteak was better, but the bun was very soft and even with added hot sauce, there just wasn’t much flavor.
We were the only customers on a Saturday afternoon, and I feel bad, but the prices are just wild for the level of food offered. $25-30 for burgers or sandwiches should set a much higher standard than this.
Pros: Large menu , Attentive waitress and food came out quickly
Cons: Extremely expensive for quality of food , Food was bland

Great food, BUT: - Edit
I really like the food here, it’s very satisfying to have a comfort meal. The options are great substitutes for “the real thing”. I really like the lobster melt, it’s probably my favorite thing. The flavors of all dishes I’ve had are really good. I got the Canadian poutine appetizer, yummy and satisfying. I also got the big jerk burger, which was supposed to come with mango and bacon on it, but didn’t come out with it on it?? I got the side salad with a lemon vinaigrette (super sour dressing), very basic salad of onion, tomato and greens.
Read moreI was disappointed with the cha cha cha dessert. It took one hour to be prepared (it was a little busy to be fair) and when I got it, I was underwhelmed with what it actually was. Described on the menu as being a chimichanga filled with “crumble” and seasonal fruit, which turns out it’s just filled with oats, with the occasional apple chunk or sliced strawberry every few bites, and drenched in oil. Was also supposed to come with whip cream and mint on the top, which for some reason I did not receive. And they gave it to me in a to go container because they just assumed I was trying to get out of there because I had been in there for 2 hours already, bill paid at that point, and they probably thought I was ready to leave, a fair gesture but ultimately not what I wanted when I was just trying to enjoy my $16 dessert, as intended.
Overall this place is a mess, I get it, they are probably understaffed and can’t afford to hire more people, it’s hard to be a successful vegan business. I understand the prices being this high, but the overall experience is just not luxurious enough and the ingredients like the missing bacon and mango on my burger, or the missing topping on my dessert just do not feel like the price can be justified.
So remember: the food really is great but;
-This place is not a “grab a quick meal”. if you dine in, expect to have a wait time of at least 30 minutes after ordering. This isn’t a huge issue for me, as I never come here when I’m rushed. The staff are really friendly, but everything just moves very slowly here.
-Some ingredients may be missing from order

Terrible - Edit
They had only 2 workers, a chef and a waiter. The waiter was very nice and helpful but with only one waiter the food took forever. I waited about 20 minutes for my Mac and cheese. My friend ordered waffles but the machine was broken. It took them forever to tell us that and I was already finished by the time they did. So here I am sitting there waiting for them to make my friend’s pancakes(they couldn’t fix the waffle maker) while I had already finished my meal.

Poor service and management - Edit
Went to TMV for lunch today. We walked in a saw only 2 tables of 2 so it wasn’t busy. Sign said to wait to be seated so we waited a minute or so which frankly was too long considering the hostess was standing right behind the counter. Anyway we ordered bottled water and started reviewing the menu. The menu is overwhelming. There were actually too many options (not something I’ve said before at a vegan place). The hostess came to take our order but we hadn’t gotten thru the menu yet so we asked for 2 more minutes. She then returned about 10 minutes later and we ordered. 30 minutes later we hadn’t received any food. My husband pointed out that it looked like the cooks were looking at the recipe for the dishes. After 45 minutes we went to the counter and said we couldn’t wait. The server/hostess just yelled to the cooks to stop working on our food and then charged us $8 for our 2 bottles of water. No apologies or excuses or anything. Never again, wish I could give fewer stars.

So many options! - Edit
Love that there’s a fully vegan spot in down town royal oak! The staff here are so friendly! The food was yummy with nice portions. The sauce for spinach dip and steak stroganoff were more sweet than salty. If you don’t love cashew based cheese/sauce avoid it. The Philly was heavenly! The crab bites blew us away and so did the mousse dessert. Higher prices than usual but happy to support vegan in a place that generally costs more anyways.

Same reviews as everyone else. Food is good not great, and super expensive. Service was really good though. The poutine fries were 3/5 for me, but I did really like the broccoli chicken Alfredo and the buffalo sandwich (but it's super messy, don't order it on a date!)

The potato skins and fish tacos were excellent. The Mac and cheese was unremarkable. Plenty of seating, thanks possibly to the pricing. My date, who is not vegan, enjoyed the food. Always glad to see an all vegan restaurant regardless.

Good, but mixed. - Edit
Yes, they are expensive. The portion sizes are good, but even so the prices seem more Las Vegas than Royal Oak.
Read moreThe service is very hit and miss, especially since they've been open for 6 weeks or so (as of 2024/10/13). They were out of many things including coffee (at opening time on Sunday). Our food for a table of four came out at very different times, with one unlucky person waiting 20 minutes longer than the rest of us.
The menu is huge and interesting, and the flavors were great. We took leftovers home.
I love breakfast burritos, and I tried the one here. It was good, but didn't read as "breakfast" to me. The most breakfast thing on the plate was the potatoes.
In short, I would eat here again, but I'm also not in a rush to do so. There are several other places in the RO area that have great vegan options, with better service and cheaper prices.
Pros: Big menu, all vegan!, Desserts and cocktails too!
Cons: Prices, Uneven service.

pricy - Edit
tried to go here once and the doors were locked hours before closing. went in a different day and it was extremely pricey, like $22 for a salad pricey. not what i was expecting since the restaurant itself did not look very fancy. my boyfriend and i decided to split a nacho appetizer because we couldn’t afford anything else but they were out of the ingredients to make nachos so unfortunately we had to leave.

Getting up to speed - Edit
New restaurant with great options. Very friendly staff.
Read moreWe were greeted and asked to wait 15 minutes (there were many open tables, so they must have been understaffed, I never had this happen to me before at a restaurant). We ordered two dishes which were good but not good enough for the price.
I would give them another chance, hopefully they will iron out all the details soon.

Overpriced and Seriously Underwhelming Vegan Junk Food - Edit
For nearly $30, I expected a lot more than lackluster vegan fare. The burger options were uninspired, relying heavily on processed fake meats like Gardein as add-ons. Everything was overwhelmingly salty. The margarita, priced like a craft cocktail, tasted like a premade, store-bought concoction with a sickly lime garnish - I had to send it back.
Read moreThe attentive service was the only redeeming quality, but it couldn't make up for the disappointing food. Even vegan junk food should be delicious, and this place missed the mark on taste, price, and overall experience.

Cons: Ultra Processed Foods , Expensive low quality cocktails, Very expensive

Edit in review after second visit a week after opening. Original menu had many gluten free options. The staff is still struggling to run the restaurant so the current menu in reduced, but still quite large except almost all of the gluten free options were removed. If you need gluten free then wait for the full menu to come back. Prices are very high.

Metro Detroit Misses Street Beet :( - Edit
Read moreOur recent visit to The Modern Vegan was marred by a series of disappointments that overshadowed the otherwise flavorful food.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were not greeted by anyone and had to wait around five minutes before being seated. Once we were finally seated, we placed our order, which included drinks, appetizers, and entrees. However, the waitress soon informed us that one of the meals we had ordered was unavailable. Five minutes later, she returned to inform us that they couldn't make one of the drinks due to a lack of ingredients.
The service continued to falter when we received only one out of three waters. the rest of our party did not receive their waters until they explicitly asked for it. The appetizers arrived, followed by two out of the three meals after about 20 minutes. The rest of us had finished eating without ever having received the third meal or cocktail. We informed the waitress (who we later discovered was the manager) that we no longer wanted the third meal or cocktail. Astonishingly, the manager explained that the cocktail had not been prepared because the bartender had not yet arrived. This raised the question of why drink orders were being taken without a bartender present. She also blamed the late meal on the kitchen, but at no point during our visit did she tell us that the food was running late or apologize. She seemed upset that we didn’t want to pay for the third meal even though we didn’t receive it!
During our visit, there were only three other parties in the restaurant. We observed another party leave without being served and another customer waiting to be seated eventually gave up and left. The food we received was lukewarm, and while it had excellent flavor, it did not compensate for the poor service.
I ordered a chicken sandwich with a salad, but the salad was served without dressing.
Additionally, our waters were never refilled, and we had to request silverware as none was provided initially.
In summary, while the food had good flavor, the overall dining experience was severely impacted by inadequate service, long wait times, and lack of basic hospitality. I do not expect this restaurant to be in business long if they don’t improve their terrible service.
I would give one star if I could!
Pros: Food was flavorful, Clean Environment, Lots of options
Cons: Terrible Hospitality , Long wait, Lack of care

Tasty food, large portions - Edit
So excited for the modern vegan to finally be open!
Read moreThis is written on their opening day, and while everything was delicious I'd say that the servers still have some kinks to work out. I had to ask three different people for a glass of water while sitting at the bar waiting for my food because they were running around and didn't have their communication down yet, which took about 15 minutes to get. My salad also came with the wrong dressing, which is an honest mistake when they're learning how to expedite food at a fast pace on their first day. I'm certain that as time goes on it'll get better but those were my only issues. Looking forward to returning!
