vegan pho - Edit
They do have vegan pho. It is item 7 on the menu. Remember this is a small, somewhat downtrodden, desert town, so to find anything truly vegan is something to be grateful for. The owner did know what vegan means (no egg, no fish sauce etc). Order without tofu as they only have fried tofu and the fryer is shared with meat things.

Pros: independently owned, charming, somewhat gritty 1950s prior gas station, vegan option in the desert

Didn’t know didn’t care - Edit
Stopped here after trying another restaurant down the road as a last resort in town. Employee, when asked if the veggie pho could be made vegan, responded despondently “all I know is that it’s got vegetables in it.” Upon further inquiry if they knew the ingredients they said no. Left to check out Joshua Tree

Tasty option in the desert - Edit
Although Twentynine Palms may be convenient for Joshua Tree National Park, there's a real lack of vegan options in the area. Thankfully, we saw The Jelly Donut in the app and decided to check it out. After speaking with the owner?/employee?, she assured us that the veggie pho was definitely vegan if ordered with tofu.
Read moreWe ordered two bowls ($13 each), and were told that it was "cash only for hot food." (Does that mean the you can charge donuts?) She pointed to an ATM in the corner which was not one that I would feel confident using. Luckily, we had cash. I asked if we could get some water with the food, but tap water isn't an option. You can purchase bottles of water. We took some Sriracha and Hoisin sauce to a table on the front patio.
When the food was ready, she knocked on the window. The pho was packaged in 'to-go' containers with small bags of bean sprouts, herbs, and jalapenos. It's not the giant plate full of garnish you get at Vietnamese Pho shops, but it was a a nice touch. The broth was a little bland, but there were lots of tender carrots, cabbage, broccoli, & tofu.
We only saw plastic forks inside, so we had to slurp our pho once we ate most of the solids. The pho was really filling and was nice to eat outside as the sun set. As this area is a bit of a 'food desert,' we may be back for another meal before we leave.
Pros: Pho is definitely vegan , Lots of fresh veggies, Fresh garnish provided
Cons: Cash only, No tap water provided for dine-in

Vegan Pho - yummy - Edit
The vegan pho is full of fresh veggies. The broth is simple and salty. The rice noodle are cooked to perfection.
Read moreStaff is knowledgable about vegan diet.
Drinks- There is no sugar added coconut water, cheap bottled water, soy milk (in a can), and grass jelly drink.
If it is not too busy, ask about the (adult theme) poem in the menu.
Sad that the dumplings and egg rolls did not have a vegan / vegetarian option.
As of 12/2019 this is the only Happy Cow listing in 29 Palms.
Pros: Tasty, Hot- a pro in the winter
Cons: Only 1 option
