Unimaginative

We recently visited The Ivy Cardiff for an early dinner and left with mixed feelings.

On the positive side, the food we tried was genuinely delicious. The avocado purée starter was nice—though a couple more crispbreads would’ve made it feel more complete. For mains, we shared the vegan curry and the lentil and aubergine bake, both of which were full of flavour and beautifully presented. However, the portion sizes were quite modest, especially considering the premium pricing.

Service started strong with attentive door staff who made us feel welcome. That said, despite our early reservation and a visible presence of front-of-house staff, there was an unexpected delay between our starters and mains. It was also disappointing that we weren’t offered the separate vegan menu or asked about dietary requirements—we had to request it ourselves after noticing the main menu didn’t list all the plant-based options.

Dessert was the biggest letdown. With only sorbet or fresh fruit on offer for vegans, it felt like an afterthought.

In summary: The Ivy Cardiff delivers on taste but falls short on consistency and attention to detail—especially for vegan diners.
