In many ways, this venue is a microcosm of Dubai itself: retaining the best parts of the original it aims to replicate – in this case, classic pub aesthetic and charm – expunging all the unsavoury elements, and then capping it off with glorious twenty-seven-degree heat in the depths of December.

Fortuitously, that’s exactly what I got. After a little miscommunication from my server and a rather protracted wait, I was treated to three impeccably executed plates. None of them were particularly elaborate, just simple, hearty dishes done right. The burger, with an always welcome pot of mayo, just about edged out the fantastic onion rings as my favourite item thanks to its meaty, unctuous flavour.
As much as I did enjoy every last bite of what I ordered, there was one thing that put a dampener on proceedings. Obviously, the astronomically expensive pints irked me slightly (though I do begrudgingly accept this part and parcel of UAE life), but there was a more egregious aspect that sullied my experience here – the service. Yes, it was busy, and I have no doubt that a few patrons may have been making life difficult, but I couldn’t abide the fact that I was made to feel like a burden, both to waitstaff and bar staff, rather than a welcome guest.
It’s a real shame that environment wasn’t more hospitable, as the food, though rather costly, was on point. Perhaps it was an off-day for all; I would definitely be minded to give the benefit of the doubt and make a return visit.
