Get a few dishes to share

I finally got to try this restaurant after many years of hearing great reviews. We got five dishes to share between two which was more than enough. We could have stopped at four but we weren’t sure of the serving sizes. Each dish was flavoursome and well presented. Food was fresh and service was fairly quick.

Pros: Menu clearly labeled vegan items and gluten free, Cocktails labelled vegan/gluten free, Only one vegan main but lots of generous sides

A hidden gem with lots of options

We were so blown away to find such an exquisite fine dining experience with so many vegan options! The staff are knowledgeable and very accomodating, happy to alter dishes based on dietary requirements. The mushroom agnolotti dish is CRAZY good, half the mushrooms are hand foraged (!!) and it absolutely blew my mind.

Fine dining in the hills

The Independent came highly recommended from local vegan friends of mine, as a venue that catered well to vegans as well as other dietary intolerances. As a Lo-FODMAP vegan, the clear labelling of garlic and onion free items made ordering simple.

Pros: Lots of delicious vegan options, Exceptional and friendly service , Very accommodating of dietary intolerances

Impressive!

Wow, what a hidden gem for vegans. The service was exceptional with our waiter being friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We tried the empanadas which were amazing. From the medium dishes we tried the beetroot and carrots. We also tried a palm tree core dish (can't remember the name) and it was certainly the highlight. Dessert was chocolate sorbet with chilli cashew - divine. Restaurant is spacious and has a great atmosphere, very cool interior design!

Pros: Vegan options, Bursts of flavour, Attentive service

A Real Gem

Restaurant quality food and exquisite presentation; it was like MasterChef for vegans! Similar venues in Melbourne rarely cater for vegans, but The Independent has many exciting dishes, including dessert. Modern Argentinian menu designed to share (items are marked vegan or vegan adaptable, and you'll be spoiled for choice!). Coffee was excellent (they use Bonsoy).

We were made to feel very welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Our server took the time to introduce the concept, explain the menu and ascertain dietary requirements.

Dining room is airy, and there is quite a lot of space around tables so seating is very comfortable.

Pros: Restaurant quality food, Lots of vegan options marked on menu, Friendly and knowledgeable staff

Just Delightful

We travelled out to Gembrook with some friends for a special occasion. We were delighted by everything at The Independent: the service, the menu, the venue and the food.
We were all blown away by the food! Omnis included.
Our six vegan tapas style dishes were intricate in flavour, rich and tasty. We ordered 'feed me' style, and received items not appearing on the menu. The chef has been cooking vegan food for over 10 years, and the complexity in the dishes showcased this. Please check out the photos I have taken which actually do not do it justice, including an innovative dessert.
They have a separate plant-based menu. Service was faultless and plenty of space between tables meant noise levels were good too.

Pros: Ambience, Seperate plant based menu

Cons: They are known for thier meat dishes too

Excellent food with heaps of vegan options

The vegan menu here is exceptional; with lots of options to choose from. Most of it is gluten free and there are a range of tasty options including stews, salads and potato dishes. We tried 5 dishes (2 stews, 2 salads and a potato dish) between 3 people and it was more than we needed. Every dish was exceptionally tasty.

It is a sharing format (they bring out mid-sized dishes and you each have an individual plate to dish onto) and the individual dishes are well priced (around $20 each), but you probably need 3 between 2 people (the trick is deciding on just 3!!).

The staff are great too, very friendly and helpful.

They have a meat menu as well but that is on a separate menu card so we didn't see that.

I would definitely give them 5 stars if the system allowed it (can't assign 5 stars to places that serve meat). It is not realistic for a restaurant this regional to not serve meat, they would go out of business in a week. It is rare to find something out here that even considers vegans!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Excellent flavours, Friendly staff

Cons: A bit pricey if you get 3 dishes for 2 people
