A Hidden Gem in Portobello

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Portobello Health Foods (The Grain Shop), and I was blown away by the quality of the food and the friendly service. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful, and the food choices were diverse and flavorful. I especially enjoyed the buffet-style setup, which allowed me to try a variety of dishes.

They had a small dining area and since the place wasn’t massive, we were happy to have the option to eat in. The food was also very reasonably priced, especially considering the high quality and freshness of the ingredients. As a vegan, I was thrilled to find so many delicious options that were clearly labeled and prepared with care. Also, 90% of the food options were vegan. The non-vegan options are clearly labelled.

Overall, I highly recommend Portobello Health Foods to anyone in the area looking for a tasty, healthy, and affordable meal. It's great to see a vegan/vegetarian restaurant thriving in Portobello, and I'll definitely be back to try more of their delicious offerings. #Veganuary

Pros: Tasty, Healthy, Affordable

Vegetable based and delicious

You enter the store and it smells delicious right away. I got a big box for around £10 filled with lentil pie, cooked red cabbage, a chickpea dish, mixed green beans broccoli and braised mushrooms.
They also offer some pastries and various cold drinks. Plus points for being able to pay with cash while so many other London Restaurants don't take cash anymore. This is my go-to spot for healthy lunch in the area now!

A good kept secret

Excellent range of vegan options. You can choose your own box or ask the staff to create a vegan box-as I did. Generous portions and tons of veg. There are also vegetarian options so do be aware

Pros: No nonsense , Value for money , Tasty

Cons: A bit small so not ideal for groups

Awesome place

Amazing flavors in a tiny place that serves mostly take out. But we decided to sit and eat. Indian style foods and home style dishes made there on the premises. Loved their portion sizes! Good food.

Pros: Everything was vegan!, Cheap

Cons: Foods were on top of each other

Succulent vegan food and wonderful service

Stumbled on this yesterday on a day out in Portobello Road. What a blessing! Filled up my box with a bit of everything - so much choice! An eclectic mix of succulent dishes from different parts of the world. It's so hard to east out with tasty vegan food - this place smashed that problem. We ate in, taking advantage of the cafe setting.

The owner also twisted my arm to have the apple crumble (which I took home - I was full!) - my favourite desert before I turned vegan - and it didn't disappoint! The first time I've tasted vegan crumble and loved it! She has a wonderful service attitude about her and is a great sales woman, which added to the welcoming, home cooking kitchen vibe. I'll be back!

Pros: Succulent vegan dishes from all parts of the world, Hot vegan food, No limit to the mix of dishes you can choose

Sooooo nice - amazing portions

We got two large boxes and basically got every vegan option they had plus salad (maybe 3 or 4 options that were not vegan out of 20ish). Theres an eat in fee of 60p so all together it was just over £10. They also had savoury pastries and cakes too. Amazing!

Healthy vegan food to go!

Loved that there were so many vegan dishes and desserts to choose from. Not too expensive at £8.95 for a medium sized box . Not all dishes are vegan, some are vegetarian so be sure to ask. You can either takeaway or eat in (it's 60p extra to eat in)

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Quick service and takeaway

Amazing food, Amazing value!

Great atmosphere, lovely service and great value for money. Portion sizes are very generous and their is loads of choice. Would highly recommend especially if you have a non vegan friend. My boyfriend and I shared a large box for £10 (sit in) and it was the perfect lunch amount for us.

Pros: Great value , Incredibly tasteful , Friendly staff

Cons: None

Wonderful selection of veg / vegan cooked food at great value

I am giving full marks because the selection of healthy cooked food on display is wonderful and suitable for vegetarian or vegan. It is served in 3 sizes of foil trays. There is not a lot of space in store, so most people come for take-away, and there is a small charge for eating in. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

I nearly dropped a star because the shop front looks run-down these days and needs a lick of paint over the graffiti. But once you are inside it is fine. Because of the value and variety of dishes, I am happy to come here often for my lunch. The medium size tray is enough to fill me up.

They also have a salad section and vegan desserts, which include CBD cakes. There are other healthy products on sale behind the counter.

Pros: A large selection of veg and vegan hot dishes, Good value prices, Friendly staff

Cons: Looks a bit run-down from the outside, Not much space to eat in

Love all the vegan options

This place has great vegan options and the staff is always friendly, I just had to take off one star because the chickpeas always seem to be a bit undercooked

Pros: So many vegan options

oh so good!!!

this has been one of my favourite london places ever since discovering it a few years ago. i come here every time i visit portobello road and have never been disappointed. the choice of dishes is excellent! everything’s great in taste & flavour and most is vegan.
the normal portion for me is plenty and sometimes difficult to handle - therefore amazing value for money! i have never felt disappointed in eating here and service has always been great (they fill the boxes up to the limit and are helpful when it comes to explaining different dishes!)

i always pair my food with a little alpro strawberry drink. most times i take it away but i’ve also eaten in which was nice :)

Pros: choice!!!, taste!, location, service

Good choice of warm food on the go

Got served pretty quickly, purchasing a large box to go £7.20 which was filled with chickpea curry, spicy Mediterranean veg, coconut dhal, spring greens and beans and a mushroom dish.

Staff were helpful. they keep all dairy dishes at one end and vegan at the other. The woman pointed out where the vegan dishes started so you could steer clear of non-vegan food. However, there is a lack of labels so its a bit of a pot luck.

Portion size is very good. There is a limited amount of seating inside (for a small surcharge) or plently nearby.

Pros: Quick, Staff knowledgeable about what is and isnt vegan, good choice.

Cons: lack of labels

Good healthy vegan options

Very small and convenient takeaway restaurant with a few seats to eat in. Quite a lot of options but very little labeled to know whether Vegan. A rule of thumb - anything that doesn't have melted cheese on it is vegan, so not so difficult. Would go there again.

Pros: lots of vegan options, mostly healthy, friendly staff

Cons: lack of labeling on vegan options

My Favorite Veggie Place In London

I love this place and have eaten here on and off for over 20 years. Huge choice of food, conveniently separated into vegan and vegetarian. Great value for money, very tasty and very healthy. Also, a great selection of vegan cakes. A few seats inside, and also a couple of small parks nearby, where most people sit and eat. Excellent.

Pros: Best in London, Large selection, Vegan cakes

wheat free, vegan, vegetarian and cheap!

£6.50 for a huge takeaway box of vegan and wheat free food. Serves my favourite coconut water too! Hot and cold food and some delicious cakes with some vegan and wheat free chocolate. Places to sit inside. Very helpful and friendly staff. Definitely one not to miss out on when you take a trip down Portobello Market!

Pros: vegan and wheat free, friendly and helpful staff, delicious, healthy and cheap food

Fairly meh

Small vegetarian take-away right on Portobello road. Lots of warm food for veggies (stuff like shepherd's pie, moussaka, etc) but limited warm options for vegans. There was a list on the counter of everything warm that WASN'T vegan, though when I inquired about a couple of the other items (croissants & pizza) I found out they weren't either. All deserts were marked clearly so I ended up with a (very good) brownie and a ginger beer. Boyfriend (veggie) had a pizza which he said was so-so.

Nice place as it's all veggie, but apart from that doesn't have anything over the (cheaper) street vendors selling falafel, vegetable dumplings etc. Especially as it's lacking in warmth- both due to food options and lack of seating.

Pros: central & easy to find on Portobello Rd, yummy & clearly labelled desserts

Cons: vegan options haphazardly marked, no seating

Eat here...

We ended up staying close to Grain Shop and I must have eaten here 3-4 times. The options are almost entirely vegan and the staff is friendly and helpful. In a city where everything is sooooo expensive, this place is cheap and they give you alot of food. Someone else said it, but definitely order your food w/o a lid and they keep piling on food. It is take away, but if you cross Portobello and keep walking, there is a cute park with benches close by. I wish there were more restaurants like the Grain Shop..

Pros: Tasty, Inexpensive, Huge portions

Cons: No seating

Good value take away

There were about 10 savoury dishes to choose from, most of which were vegan, and you can choose any number to have in your tub (small or large tubs). All the ones I had were great. Also, had an amazing vegan chocolate pecan brownie which was great value and exceedingly tasty.
Worth a visit if you're in the area and want a good value vegan or vegetarian take away

Pros: good range, tasty, vegan cakes

Great Food at an Affordable Price

They have a great selection of vegan and vegetarian foods. It's inconvenient that it is take-away only, yet, if you ask for your container with no lid you will get twice as much food so it's worth the hassle. There is a park nearby to sit in to eat. It's a good deal for the price which was around 5 pounds. I would actually give the food quality 5 stars. The split pea dal with rice and greens is delicious. There is a great variety to choose from for both vegans and vegetarians; however, the vegan food is not marked. I'm allergic to egg and dairy so I hate to have to ask about every item. They do have yummy vegan and gluten-free desserts which are marked. Overall a great little vegetarian eatery on Portobello Road.

Pros: Delicious food, Inexpensive (by London standards anyway), Generous portions if you get no lid

Cons: Take-away only, Vegan items not marked as "vegan"

Take-away

Near where Portobello Market is held on the weekend.
Small space consisting of counter and space to stand in front of it. It is a takeaway.

Selection of items which you can choose from to fill a container. Items range from stir fry to sheperd's pie type bakes. There is also a cake section with various slices, biscuits.

A container can be got for around five pounds.

For me this is a three and a half.

Pros: Healthier to some alternative takeaways

Cons: there is better cuisine in the world
