Great alternative

My hometown has a huge cooperative grocery that is my first stop for shopping. The Cooperative Food Shop (aka ANU Co-op) is too small to provide everything, but is still a go-to for certain bulk and obscure items, like bulk oils and vinegars, fairtrade products, etc.. I go for delicious brown rice, beans, teas and tonic herbs, nuts, Colombian panela sugar and chocolate, and tempeh. If you become a member you receive up to 20% discount on purchases, but you don't have to be a member to shop. You can also bring your own containers, and weight them before so you don't get charged. In addition to food stuffs, they also have a small selection of prepared foods, and eco-friendly body care and home care products, both packaged and bulk (like shampoo, conditioner, dish liquid).

Closed Monday for inventory and restocking. Their hours change seasonally, so check their website to be sure.

Cheap, healthy and good vibe

We arrived a little late in the day at 1pm and they were all sold out of the cakes/sweets. We opted for a lunch plate and a vegan iced coffee which was very nice and very reasonably priced. There was only 1 option for lunch and no one seemed to be asking what it was so we followed suit. I think it was rice, soy beans, roasted beetroot and then some chilli. Simple and tasty. Impressed that this place was so busy and just felt like a great place to hang out and catch up with friends. We really appreciated that they had a bottle stash that people could use for their zero waste dry store purchases. Overall nice place for a casual lunch.

Pros: Cheap, Lots of drink options

Cons: Only 1 lunch option

Cheap and healthy

Great bulk food shop, the cheapest you will find in Canberra. The food is delicious and cheap. The dish served for lunch changes every day.

Cheap, Healthy, Yum and great community atmosphere

The co op is close to the Drill Hall Gallery which is lovely to browse after a full tummy. Great healthy vegan meal of veggies and grains for $6 which makes any coffee seem expensive. The cheap meal also gives more freedom to spend more money on items in the co op which isn't so cheap. Would be a fantastic place if you're a financially struggling student.
