Decent, but where else would you go?

The vegan options now:
spring rolls
dhaal (Indian lentils)
stir fry
veg pizza without cheese

That's it. Not a lot, but vegan options are tough in this area. The kitchen staff is a bit lazy. I got there around 9pm after just arriving from an international flight. They said 'no' to my dhaal order, because they didn't feel like cooking it that late. That's odd...

Wait staff is decent. Food has a lot of quantity. There's wifi.

Food is OK (spring rolls are pretty salt, dhaal is better), prices are higher than what it's worth, but where else are you going to go?

Pros: Exists

Cons: Price, Kitchen staff, It's not great

Something Is Better than Nothing

Finding vegan, or even vegetarian, food in Freetown is not easy. This restaurant has several vegan choices including a curry, pasta, and jollof rice. There isn’t much protein in any of them, service is slow, and the food is expensive by local standards, but something is better than nothing. The hummus, offered as part of a non-vegan mezze, is good if you can convince the wait staff to serve it separately.

One of few veg* options in Sierra Leone

Understand: Not eating meat in much of the non-WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) world is associated with poverty, so eating meat is an aspirational thing. Veg* lifestyle and the reasons for it are not communicated or understood. For 32 years, I have spent all of my discretionary time in this part of the world. (40 years vegan.) If you come, be culturally sensitive.

I wish I was writing about a locally owned/operated restaurant offering veg food, but, based on about five weeks here, I don't believe there is such a place. The food at The Deck is worth commendation on its own merits. Several vegan options. The stews are tasty and have some spices added; more traditional veg dishes are akin to a mouthful of bleached flour, meant to be combined with fish or meat.

Food and ingredients often run short in Sierra Leone; check that vegetable oil is available/used or bring your own. English is spoken, so your veg request will be understood.

Pros: More veg options than any place I know in SL

Cons: Restaurant in a Western hotel, Some things oily; confirm that vegetable oil is us, Expat crowd can be a***oles.
