Good cake

Only had time for coffee and cake, but it was nice staff and atmosphere and as far as I could tell it’s actually all vegan.

There were only baby-care facilities in the ladies, which is a bit old fashioned.

A gem in Wigan

This was a welcoming, cosy little place which was a blessing on a torrential rain day. I think the menu was fully vegan but might be wrong.

lovely vibe!

A beautiful place with amazing food and service. I’m pretty sure the food menu is all vegan now but they do serve cows milk. I visited in the previous venue and loved it, but the new venue is even better. Such a lovely vibe.

Very Yummy

I got the Nachos with Guaccomili and Three Bean Chilli
My friend got the Mushroom Burger
We really enjoyed our meals, the portion sizes are generous, so so yummy! I feel energised just from the atmosphere.

I got the magic tea which was amazing, it was served in a huge tea pot. it kind of reminded me of Christmas, which is perfect for this time of year!
My friend got the Salted Caramel Smoothie which was also very nice!

I love how all the options are Plant Based!

The Waiters and Watresses was very friendly and welcoming.

I will defiantly be coming back here more often!

I loved how they was very minamilist with their waste too. Their teas are made from scratch.

Really recccomend.

Also they have glasses and a massive water tank thingy so you can drink free water!

Pros: Lots of vegan options

Cons: None

Gorgeous haven in Wigan town centre

Cosy, warm, a little shabby in the best way; The Coven is a lovely wee place to grab a coffee or a (usually huge!) lunch.
The food is cooked fresh, with good ingredients, and is invariably delicious. It's small so fills up quick, but it's worth the wait for a table if you have to!

Home from home

Walking into the Coven is like walking into a good friend's house for tea. A warm greeting always awaits along with a confirmation of your dietry requirements. As a vegan, I greatly appreciate this and know I will be looked after. The food is all homemade, hearty and delicious. The green soup (loaded with ginger - so warming!) avocado bruschetta and Greek mezze are favourite starters and my favourite main is hands down the Chinese fritters - a must try!!! Delicious vegetable fritters (made with ginger beer!) on a bed of stir-fried noodles, loaded with flavour and veggies. I have also enjoyed many other mains including a delightfully lemony lentil-based curry and a rich and flavourful Moroccan stew, which is served with potatoes - a nice change from couscous. Portions are generous, but being an absolute glutton I always have room for pudding. I absolutely adore the Black Forest sundae, which contains lovely nuggets of chocolate cake amongst ice cream, mixed berries and chocolate sauce. The Coven is BYOB, and before I gave up alcohol I used to always enjoy a bottle of wine with my dinner. These days I make the most of the excellent selection of teas and the dandelion and burdock - which goes down a treat. An absolute treasure of a restaurant, and a welcome oasis for vegans in the areas.

Pros: Majority of dishes are vegan, Incredibly nice owner, Reasonably priced

Cons: Toilet in the garden - brrr in winter!

Good food poorly presented

You are given a creased, crumpled paper menu and go through the kitchen to get to the cold, exceptionally ugly toilet. They make vegan frothy hot chocolate, which is always a major plus to me. Dishes may take a long time to prepare but are very good when they arrive. Recommend the noodles, though the dodgy menu is deficient in describing the dishes: instead of "noodles with stir-fried vegetables and mushrooms in a delicious peanut sauce, topped with sesame seeds" (which would be a fair description) they just say "satay noodles". They're missing a trick. The place was crowded when we were in on a Saturday; it's evidently quite sought-after. Prices are deceptively reasonable as portions are very large.

Pros: Healthy, delicious food, Large portions, Vegan options clearly marked

Cons: Poor appearance, Barely adequate toilet

Amazing food - fantastic experience

Enjoyed my first visit to The Coven and was very impressed. The restaurant has a very intimate and cosy atmosphere - as my husband commented- it's almost like something out of Harry Potter! Nestled out of the way on a quiet side street and very unassuming from the outside however when you step inside you are immediately struck by the welcoming atmosphere and quirky decor.

The staff were incredibly friendly and we soon felt at home - it feels so homely in fact, I immediately fell in love with the place and was planning
our next visit before we even sampled the food!

The food! Firstly it was a novelty and a treat to be asked immediately if we required veggie/vegan or gluten-free options - knowing everything on the menu could be cooked to our requirements was a first for us and it was great as a vegan to have such a good choice - normally as a vegan it's easy to choose because of the limited choices but not here! There was a good range of dishes for both starters mains and deserts and very reasonably priced for the quality that was served.

Overall this was an excellent dining experience - and I urge everyone to go and discover this gem of a restaurant for themselves. We will undoubtedly return - and I can't wait!

Wonderful veggie food and friendly welcome!

Very impressed by such a warm welcome and really great food. For long-time veggies trying to be more vegan, this was a real treat. Freshly prepared, substantial meals with lots of taste. Inventive Chinese Fritters were delicious and we loved the idea of serving the veggie burgers in toasted bagels. Couldn't resist the fab chocolate puddings and homemade muffins - with vegan ice cream too!

Sitting outside in the sunny terrace garden made this a perfect experience. Am hoping to find an excuse to travel to Wigan again for another meal!

Pros: Excellent food, Friendly knowledgeable staff, All variety of diets catered for

Jolly good nosh!

(Note to admin): The Coven is 100% vegetarian, please change description in banner, give my rating 5 stars, and remove this sentence when you do. Ta)

This is a small, pleasant space pretty much in the centre of town. I've been twice. Staff are amazingly friendly. First time I only had one thing - a Green Thai Curry. It was superb. Second time I had mushroom burger, partner had strawberry and melon salad (I think) and the sort of vegan cheese cake that does so much to boost the credibility of veganism.

All excellent quality. Prices: Around £6 for a main, bit above a cafe possibly but far below many restaurants.

Great range, including deserts. Great vegan selection throughout.

Pros: Great Selection, Lots for vegans, Not expensive

The Coven, Wigan

I was in on Thursday at lunch time. I was given a warm welcome by the guy who runs the place (and his young son who was helping out in the school holidays) and this is the low down.

The day time menu is all vego. However the evening menu is not. Wigan doesn't have a massive vegetarian market and in the evening they have had to offer some meat based dishes as the difference between stay in or going out of business.

The chef is gluten intolerant and well as being a dairy free vegetarian and they appear to be super clued up on the intricacies of special diets. I was told that when they are looking to add something to the menu they always look to offer a vegan version first if the can concoct with falling back to lacto / ovo vego if they have to. I had a quick count on the day time menu and there was around 30 items on there marked as being vegan friendly, more than half the menu.

Its a small, cosy little place with seats at tables for 19 people and also a further 'comfy' chair to relax in if for someone who only wants a drink.

The opening hours have recently changed based on client demand so the best thing is probably to look at the their own website to see the current opening hours.

In terms of food quality, I had some soup and croutons to start with that was excellent. For a main I went for the croque left to the chefs choice as to which to have. I was this given 2 different ones on my plate - very nice. My friend went for the falafel burger and described it with the exact words of, 'really, really nice'. He then went for cake and custard for dessert and as is hypnotised by the gastronomic wonder tantalising his taste buds, again said it was 'really, really nice'.

Prices were reasonable and in terms of cross refed to the quality of the food, I felt it was good value.

The location is in the centre of Wigan very close to the local bus station and a few mins walk from either of the train stations.

Pros: Vegan vego friendly, Tasty food, Nice staff

Fab little place!

Great food, lovely hosts and lots of vegan options! We are very lucky to have somewhere catering for vegans in Wigan. The place is run with real dedication and an obvious love of food, the menu is quite large and really varied and everything is yummy. They also do a lot of raw food and gluten free food so they cater for a lot of people. They have recently started opening for one evening a week too which is a real bonus for those of us (like me!) who can't get there in the daytime.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Very cosy, Evening opening once a week

Cons: Sometimes too busy and no tables free

Best place to eat in Wigan Town Centre

There is an excellent choice of vegetarian food, it is all fresh and home-made. My favourite is the falafel burger and also Greek salad, Staff are always happy to accommodate individual needs/dietary requirements. There is also a good selection of drinks e.g Teas from around the world.

The only problem is that the seating area at the front of the deli/cafe is quite small and can sometimes be full however, on a nice day the garden to the rear is superb - It almost feels like your not in Wigan (which is a bonus).

The Coven serves the best and freshest food in Wigan town centre!

Pros: Fresh Food

Cons: Very small inside

Delicious food... convenient location

We have just made a trip to Wigan to try this place out.... the variety of food suitable for vegans was great! We had so many options.... and the welcome couldn't have been better... I had the satay stir fry extra spicy and my husband had the falafel burger... extra moist! He had a soya milkshake with fresh strawberries and I had a soya caramel latte and then we had vegan cake for dessert... lemon cake and peanut cake... both delicious and again so moist. Nothing is processed, it is all fresh food. It was certainly worth the trip. It is also conveniently located near to the bus and train stations. Friendly, casual eating and good for a chat.

Pros: vegan range, tasty and healthy, convenient location

Cons: bit small
