Slacken yer troos, for the Clachen menus …

… coz yer cannae go awry, at the best at Dalry (The real Dalry 😉)

The restaurant is split into 2 rooms which are tastefully decorated. The first is the main dining room with a sofa and log fire to ponder the amazing menu. The second is Wully’s Bothy, a large barn-type room with height vaulted ceiling and a log burner. Both were warm, inviting with enough space to have an intimate meal.

We had the BBQ Tandoori Cauliflower, Bombay Potatoes, Pickled Cucumber & Hazelnut Dukkha £12.50 with a side of Ale Pickled Onion Rings £2.50. The entire dish worked really well with clever taste combinations. Deconstructed to eat and taste it, the cauliflower was perfectly Al dente and flavoured with a delicious creamy tandoori sauce. The Bombay potatoes held their shape but were soft and gave depth to the dish. The pickled cucumber had a rich but soft tanginess and the Dukkha a nuttiness balancing the dish beautifully. They need to hide the onion ring recipe as it was a star on its own - huge sweet pickled onions in a light, crispy, well seasoned batter and not at all greasy. We both agreed it was the best cauliflower dish we’d eaten and the best onion rings we’d ever eaten too. We can’t praise it highly enough.

They knew we were vegans and despite not having any vegan desserts, the waitress offered us a chef’s special. We don’t usually have a dessert but having been blown away by the main course, why not. 2 scoops of blackberry sorbet, with fresh raspberries and blackberries topped with a honeycomb cinder toffee. It tasted as good as it sounds, rounding the meal off nicely and we got 2 for 1 so it only cost £2.25 each.

Retiring to the bar for a few beers was a great move. It was dog friendly, fun, lively, well stocked with plenty of choice and friendly locals.

The staff were well trained, knowledgable, polite and made us feel very welcome.

2 mains, 1 side, 2 desserts and 6 pints of beer only came to £56.30. I’m still in shock at how much we got for our money and the quality too. Amazing.

Would we return? We’re already planning it.

Would we recommend? We travelled 4 hours and recommend others travel to experience the atmosphere, food and drinks.

Our complements to the chef for taking time to make us a dessert to suit our preferences and for an outstanding meal. Perhaps a vegan starter for our next visit, chef?

Pros: High quality food, Fantastic place, Very cheap

Cons: Not a huge choice
