Lovely traditional pub not far from city centre - Edit
I tried the lucky fish n chips and a pint of Guinness. Friendly staff and warm atmosphere. Food was well tasty, piping hot with proper home cooked chips. I’d be back to try more if I was local.

Great find! - Edit
How lovely to find a pub where the vegan option isn't an afterthought but the main deal! When visiting Newcastle this wasn't even on my radar but trying to get away from the crowds of the centre, I ended up here and I'm so glad I did. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and lots of different options. I ordered the fish and chips and it was lovely.

Atmosphere Great.
Really magic to get a Vegan Sunday Lunch.
£100 parking ticket sucks.
Parked in allocated bay but missing the sign to say you have to give the barman your license number or you get fined. Good day turned bad. Not be back☹️
Pros: Good food, Good Atmosphire, Firendly Staff
Cons: Parking Ticket, Parking Ticket, Parking Ticket

we've been here a few times and the food never disappoints. they have a great range of food and alcohol, the interior and feel of the place is lovely, and the customer service is always top notch. ive tried about half the menu so far but the fried pickles remain my favourite 💜

The carriage is a really cool pub with very friendly staff. The food is so so good. We got the fish and chips, the jackfruit shawarma, beer battered pickles and the nachos and were blown away. Delicious and decent portion sizes.

Great vegan pub - Edit
The Carriage is a proper English pub that just so happens to have a fully vegan menu. We got the tofish and chips which was excellent. It's a little out of Newcastle centre but definitely walkable.

Finally a vegan roast dinner - Edit
This pub was amazing. A classic pub with people sitting around drinking pints but with only vegan food on offer. It was amazing to see. I haven’t managed to get a roast dinner out for ages so I had to try this and it didn’t disappoint. Really nice atmosphere, lovely staff and delicious food.

All round great find. - Edit
From the food to the ambience. I found the carriage to be great.
Read moreThere was a good selection of food to choose from depending on your preference for the day, I went on to choose a traditional take on fish and chips and it really reminded me of a traditional pub meal.
An old school British pub feel with books on the wall and lots of plants about. Good selection of beers.
It is not in the centre and that too made it more appealing.
Pros: Choices , Ambiance , Quality of food vs cost
Cons: None.

Lovely Sunday roast - Edit
Had a lovely meal in the carriage. I went for the Sunday roast to begin with but I swapped it with my friend for the tofish and chips as I realised the gravy had red wine in it with I can’t have.

We had planned a proper meal but this was before we knew that Newcastle is a city of enormous food portions and we simply couldn't manage a proper lunch.

The Carriage - Edit
Booked here for Sunday lunch whilst visiting Newcastle. I had the pie (creamy chick’n and leek) with all the trimmings. You will not leave hungry as the portions are huge! The pie could’ve had more sauce as the inside was a bit dry and the pastry was a bit soggy on the bottom, but otherwise I really enjoyed my meal. The pub itself is well worth a visit being the old station and is packed full of beautiful original features. Some parking spaces outside but limited. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Dog friendly pub.

Beautiful Interior, Great Building - Edit
A beautiful building inside and out, really love all the glasswork inside and the various sections to the pub, plus how each section can have the volume of the music adjusted. Friendly welcome and service.
Read moreWe came for the Sunday roast dinner. There were two options, vegan chicken and leek pie or a loaf. The load description sounded like the burger patty I'd had the night before at The Ship so I passed on that and had the pie. The pie came with all the trimmings and looked delicious. There was an awful lot of pastry, lots of chicken and a bit of leek making up the pie. However, the plate was scraped clean and the overall experience was fab.
Pros: What a building!, Vegan!, Lots of games available.

Very good - Edit
June 2023: We have been coming here for years, as you can read, previous reviews below. Just had the Sunday dinner and it was lovely. I know the mac n cheese is great now too. We prefer The Carriage to The Ship now (haven’t been to The Ship since summer 2020). Lovely service.
Read moreNOV 2019: We also love The Ship so were keen to visit. Fewer picnic tables outside than The Ship but more inside space. Nice tiled flooring. Friendly barman. Quiet but steady flow of customers for a Saturday night. We ordered fungi pizza with loaded fries, and tofu salad with mac n cheese. The food took a while to come, although not many other people were ordering food. The pizza was great and the loading on the fries really healthy and filling. However the fries underneath were a bit cold. The fire cracker salad was ok, although messy to eat with large leaves covered in dressing, would have liked more tofu pieces (they were also cold, were they supposed to be?) The worst was the mac n cheese which was claggy, cold and dry, as if the cheese sauce had dried off somehow. Perhaps because the meals had taken a while to come? The mac n cheese was inedible (well maybe you would eat them if you were camping or hungover!). With no sauce left in the dish, no flavour. I did mention it to the lad who cleared our table. Anyway will be back to try it again and will edit my review then. Sunday menu limited. Kitchen stops at 4:30pm. Parking is a pain.
SEPT 2020: visited again and had the mac and cheese - much better - and the fungi pizza which was very much enjoyed and we would order both again. Excellent service from the barman. Pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, no overcrowding inside.
FEB 2022: finally able to be here on a night the chef is on, it has felt like 2 years but looking back at my reviews we did come here at the end of lockdown 1. We had korean parcels for a starter which were full of umami & v tasty indeed, but actually tricky to eat, each parcel being bigger than your mouth, if you cut it open the filling and the parcel fall apart! Then burger, very nice but massive and a bit over bready. Really enjoyed the homemade chips.
Added a photo here of their food hours taken from Facebook which is probably the best thing to consult as the hospitality industry gets back on its feet. We rang before walking out to check they were doing food and that worked out just perfectly.

Thank you for the review.
Read moreYou’ll be pleased to know the Mac and Cheese has had a complete rethink and we’re sure you’ll like the new version :-)
The firecracker salad was taken off the menu a couple of months ago now but yes I believe the tofu was supposed to be cold (I’ll double check with the chef)
We do run a limited menu on a Sunday as like most pubs we prefer to focus on our Sunday lunches which we stop serving at 5pm.
Parking is always free for our customers, just give a member of staff your number plate on arrival.
We also have 7 customer only car parking spaces that we’ve just had repainted in red to make them clearer and new signage is being put up this week.
Thanks again,

Lovely pub but expected more from the food - Edit
I was excited to come here and try a vegan Sunday roast after seeing the other rave reviews. I always love a vegan pub as I love pub food and you always get a big meal for a great price.
Read moreThis was a lovely pub with a traditional feel and very friendly staff. The man serving us was really lovely and attentive throughout and was very apologetic when we ordered the [censored] - A - Leeky Pie Sunday dinner and they had to serve it with extra mash instead of roast potatoes as they were out (we knew before we ordered that they were out of roast potatoes but we wanted to try anyway). He even brought two muffins for me and my wife for free as an apology! We also ordered The Lucky Fish 'N' Chips and a plate of Frickles. It was good value for money for the amount of food we got but unfortunately it wasn't as good as I'd hoped. The fish and chips came with a small amount of tofish and I just didn't find it very flavourful. I also thought the chips and mushy peas were decent but also needed more flavour. The roast dinner was also lacking for me. I was impressed with the chicken substitute inside the pie and the gravy was tasty but again the whole dish was just lacking flavour. I actually thought the frickles were the best bit – the batter was lovely and fresh and tasty.
Pros: Fully vegan pub, Lovely staff
Cons: Food needed more flavour

Great food & lovely service! - Edit
Went for Sunday dinner and it was delicious. Loved the pie & the selection of veg. Appreciate how amazing the service was - we’ve been put off the ship due to their staff service but pleased to have a venue to enjoy the same great food with a team that wants to go above and beyond. Will definitely be back!

Wholesome Vegan Pub - Edit
The Carriage is an excellent traditional pub with a full vegan menu. The menu offers traditional pub meals including fish and chips and burgers and some other non-traditional options such as Jackfruit Shawarma. With an varied range of drinks on tap including Camden Hells and Beavertown there’s a tipple to match everyone’s taste.
Read moreAs for the food I have attended this establishment 3 times and it has always been excellent and of a top standard. Fresh and well made. The chips alone are worth a visit, I personally have sleepless nights thinking of the salt and chilli chips.
AND if that isn’t enough, having dogs to watch while eating amazing food is the cherry on a wonderful vegan cake.
10/10.

I’ve been desperate to try here for ages and it did not disappoint. Went for Sunday lunch and got the Sunday loaf… lots of veg (which I’m normally not a fan of but ate it all!), mash and roasties. No yorkshire which I thought I would miss but everything else was so good I didn’t even notice. Can’t wait to go back to try the rest of the menu
