Excellent! - Edit
I ate here tonight with 7 friends, most of them meat eaters, and everyone loved it! We asked the waiter to choose the food for us, and they brought us a very nice variety of excellent dishes (and well presented, which was an esthetic bonus).

Closed or moved location - Edit
The restaurant isnt located in the mall anymore. They rebulid part of the 5th floor and restaurants nearby told me that the budda tree closed. I am not sure if it is a temporary issue or if they just moved to somewhere else

A jewel of a find - Edit
The Buddha Tree was a jewel of a find in an ocean of sand. Beautifully clean, tastefully classy, quiet, friendly and helpful staff. The food came very quickly and was well presented. I loved the taste or all the dishes. I am so thankful to HappyCow and the Buddha Tree.

Finally found Veg options in China! - Edit
It was pretty difficult to find vegan food in China, vegetarian food isn’t even available.
Read moreThis place doesn’t show up on Google maps if you type it in, but you can use the coordinates or copy and paste the name in Chinese. We used DiDi to call a taxi and copied and pasted the name on the app.
The restaurant is very cute and has a nice view at night. The staff didn’t know too much English, but they were very friendly and there was great vegan options to pick from. We enjoyed the dumplings, spring rolls, and fried mushroom with peanuts plate (can’t remember the name, sorry). Unfortunately, there wasn’t any sweets to try but we were pretty full and satisfied.
Pros: Affordable vegan options, Friendly staff , Free water
Cons: No sweets :(, Items on the menu sell out

Delicious - Edit
We’ve been here several times now, and we have loved the food each time. Their dishes are vegan versions of classic Chinese ones, all of which are delicious! The service is also excellent: they are very attentive and give great suggestions for dishes to try.
Read moreTip: While they have an English menu, it is the older version, so be sure to ask about other dishes that only feature on the Chinese menu.
Pros: Excellent food, Good value, Friendly, helpful and attentive staff

Delicious, all vegan! - Edit
We came for lunch and it was quite busy so we had to wait a while to get seated and to get our food. However we didn’t mind because the food was delicious, menu in English, very nice staff and all vegan!

Quality Food In Peaceful Settin - Edit
As noted, the Buddha Tree is situated in a shopping complex on the 5th floor. Once you get up to the 5th floor, you will see signage that will get you in the general direction. It is tucked away in a corner close to the restrooms. The picture of the restaurant front is the best way to confirm that you are in the right place. We were hosted by a Shanghai native and he did all the ordering. The standard menu is in Chinese only however they will offer a photo menu if needed. I didn't interact with the staff so cannot confirm if they spoke any English.
Read moreWe had an opportunity to dine there for both lunch and dinner. We sampled vegetarian chicken nugget on skewers, wild mushrooms with peppers, lotus root stuffed with minced soy beef, braised green squash, sauteed yam leaves, fried rice, soup with king oyster oyster mushroom slices and bean curd skin and coconut battered deep fried banana with durian.
The food was consistently good and the prices are moderate with many dishes in the 30-50 RMB range. The only issue that was problematic was that a number of dishes listed on the menu were noted as sold out. I'm note sure if they were having supply issues or if the restaurant simply discontinued slow selling items. This location is 7 stops on the Metro Line 2 from the iconic Oriental Pearl Center - a must see and tour when in Shanghai.
Pros: Excellent Food, Prompt Service, Quiet Peaceful Setting
Cons: Tricky To Locate on 5 Floor Shopping Complex, Not Many Other Visitor Attractions In This Area

Wonderful New Restaurant - Edit
Although a bit far from downtown Shanghai, the Buddha Tree is a nice, quiet restaurant with great food. It is conveniently located right at the Jinke Subway station, it can be a bit troublesome to find.
Read moreTake the #2 exit to the street level and enter the shopping center (turn right at the top of the escalator). take either the escalators or elevator to the 5th floor. The Buddha Tree is somewhat buried in with other restaurants, and the name in English is not apparent on the front. You can use the images provided to help locate the restaurant. If you are good with compass headings, it is located on the north side of the 5th floor.
As of the date of this posting, the map is showing the wrong location. A correction has been submitted to correct the map location. However, the written description is correct.
The food is good, with portions that are just a bit small for the price. However, the price is reasonable. 50-70 RMB/ person would be a rough estimate of cost. We probably would have rated this 5 cows if the portion sizes were a bit bigger.
All the dishes are vegan, with no egg, dairy, etc. This should be considered a vegan listing.
If you are in this area we do recommend you stop in and check them out!
Pros: English and Chinese menus, Some English is spoken. , Credit cards taken
Cons: Portions a bit small, Far from city center
