Friendly & Welcoming

Friendly and welcoming staff, a good selection of vegan options on the menu and an option to meet the rescue animals they have on site - perfect!

Great spot on route of WHW

I stopped here for lunch on my first leg of WHW and it was great!

So many vegan options! They are hiker friendly and it's right on the WHW trail so no need to detour.

I had the vegan chicken burger with chips and vegan coleslaw.

I was amazed that they had a vegan kit kat sundae so I had to have that too 😊

The only choice of milk was oat for my tea.

The staff were all friendly and it was exactly what I needed to rest up during my hike!

Pros: Options!, Right on trail, Friendly staff

Must-stop location on the WHW!

The beech tree arrives just at the right time on the route between Milngavie and Drymen, and the range of vegan options is really amazing. We were absolutely spoiled for choice and all the food we tried was brilliant, definitely recommend planning this as a stop in your route (very much hiker friendly, muddy boots welcome and some space to put bags out of the way if you're eating in the main restaurant)

Es gibt total viele vegane Optionen; ich hatte das No-Chicken BLT Sandwich und es war super lecker. Das Personal war auch unglaublich freundlich.

Pros: Personal, Anzahl veganer Optionen, Essen

Cons: Wespen im Garten

Beech Tree Inn

There’s quite a few vegan and veggie options on the menu, plus vegan ice cream and cakes in the shop. We had a tour of the animal enclosures and met some of the rescues - ponies, pygmy goats, rabbits and guinea pigs - all adorable and you get lots of interaction with them so the animal experience is well worth doing (you need to book ahead). Lunch-wise, we went for the lentil soup, roasted pepper toastie and veggie haggis. All very nice and the service was excellent. Really charming staff here too. Well worth a visit.

Pros: Fab animal experience with the rescues 🐐🐰🐴🐹, Good food , Really friendly service

Beef Wellington and sweet treats

After exploring the area we stopped here as there was a variety of vegan options on the menu. Lots of option on the main menu and the days specials(as well as sticky toffee pudding dessert). Even snagged myself some vegan lemon cake!!! When we went there wasn’t many people there but still a lovely atmosphere, cosy area, lovely staff. There are some rescue animals and ponies, that children are able to have an education lesson, on feeding and caring for…..

Pros: Vegan main menu choice and specials , Vegan pudding , Vegan drinks

Cons: Not a con, per say, just a little small,

3 Stars for Options, 2 Stars for Taste

We hadn’t been to The Beech Tree for a while, so it was great to see they’d recently changed their menu to include LOTS of vegan options (previously there were few vegetarian dishes, and none marked vegan). Although it was a pleasant surprise to see the new menu, our choices weren’t particularly flavourful and I think there might still be confusion over veganism (so be particularly wary if you have allergies).

I went for the “Roots Burger”. Not sure if it’s any different from their “Veg Burger”, other than there being two patties. We’d specified vegan, but still got served the non-vegan coleslaw and perhaps this means the bun wasn’t vegan either. I have no idea what the patties were made from (they were white/grey-ish in colour), but unfortunately they were very bland.

My boyfriend asked for the vegan “Vegetable Fajitas”, which was served with non-vegan cheese, creme fraiche and no rice (which seemingly should’ve been included with the vegan option). This was tasty enough but basic. We’d also ordered sweet potato fries, which were a little bland.

Lastly we had the Devils Food Cake for dessert. This was a very tasty chocolate cake, marked vegan, but doesn’t specify on the menu that you need to modify to actually make it vegan - no cream, ice cream, or custard (and no alternatives offered).

Although it’s great to have lots of vegan menu options in an area where vegans aren’t particularly catered for, our meal wasn’t great and was a little pricy for what we got (£35 for two mains, fries, one small slice of cake). We’ll stick to drinks and cake in future.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Appreciated effort in recently changing menu

Cons: Pricy for what it is, Confusion over veganism, Bland
