Elevated to new heights

When selecting a hotel in the Fukato Tamagawa region, having vegan restaurants nearby was a top priority. So I was happy to see that the restaurant inside the "Tokyu Excel Hotel" has vegan options! They are in fact listed very clearly on a separate page of the menu! Because the restaurant is located on the 30th floor, you will enjoy a beautiful view of Tokyo, Kawasaki and even Yokohama while dining.

We first tried the "vegan curry rice" and while pricey it is of exceptional quality. The curry isn't very rich in ingredients, but the restaurant makes up for this with a separate bowl of (steamed?) vegetables, although it is not nearly as lavish as the photo on the menu suggests. There's also a small salad in a cup. All in all, an exceptionally good interpretation of a basic Japanese dish.

A day later we ordered the "vegan spaghetti bolognaise". Again a simple meal, but the 30th Floor restaurant manages to elevate it to new heights (literally and figuratively). In Italy spaghetti is drowning in sauce and one almost has to fish for the pasta. In Japan original tastes are preserved and therefore this Japanese interpretation of the recipe is much more refined. I can even go so far as to state it is the best spaghetti I ever had, thanks to it's delicacy and simplicity.

There are no vegan desserts. Some side dishes like chickpea croquet (the restaurant's fancy name for falaffel) and fries are not listed as vegan, but seem to be.

Of course the Excel hotel also offers breakfast. It is buffet style, so one can find rice, vegetables, bread and cereal. I had to ask for plant milk, but this was quickly supplied. However, because of the hefty price of 3.000 yen per person for breakfast we used it only once (breakfast is more expensive than dinner!).

The rating of only 4 stars is because of the expensive and average breakfast. Also, one expects top quality and these prices. 5 star ratings are for restaurants that exceed expectations. The 30th Dining Bar does exactly what the name says: it elevates food to new heights.

Pros: excellent quality, 2 clearly listed vegan options, beautiful views

Cons: expensive, no vegan desserts, no vegan breakfast
