thai fine dining with a substantial vege menu - Edit

i'd read about thanying's vegetarian menu on mr and mrs vegan ( and my aunt was kind and generous enough to treat us to dinner there.

i'd mistakenly thought that there was a vegetarian set menu, but when i emailed them beforehand for it i was asked to order a la carte dishes instead. turns out they have an extensive vegetarian menu, several pages long (from what i remember, vegan dishes are not labelled).

i was the only vegetarian of the group, with my mum 95% veggie and eating only certain fish; the other four were omnivores. four veggie dishes were ordered to ensure i had enough to fill me up: tom yum goong, corn fritters, pomelo salad, and tofu cubes with basil.

i thoroughly enjoyed the tom yum goong - it was my first time tasting the clear version and it was invigorating and refreshing with enough bite (ask for the non-spicy version if you prefer). with sufficient veg and mushrooms, i didn't miss the prawns at all.

of the rest, i can't recall anything standing out in particular: the pomelo salad was decent; the corn fritters were on the chewy side, so much so that i had suspicions it wasn't pure veg initially; the tofu cubes got a bit boring after a while.

for desserts, we shared fresh mango (very succulent and tasty) and red ruby (which unsurprisingly was too sweet and artificial for my taste). there's a dessert buffet too (sgd9 per pax), if that's your cup of tea - it looks a rather large spread.

my aunt prefers not to order leafy vegetables when dining out, as she believes they aren't washed properly, so we regrettably didn't get to try veggies like kangkong. if i were to go back again, i'd like to try a veg dish, a curry dish and maybe a pad thai.

that said, with the extremely high prices, i probably wouldn't return on my own any time soon. still, i'd like to give a shout-out to a restaurant that makes an effort to cater to its vegetarian diners (especially rare for a thai restaurant in singapore). it makes communal dining so much easier for both omnivores and herbivores.

Pros: substantial vege menu, friendly service staff

Cons: very expensive
