I love this place!

Teranga is located in the Africa Center in Harlem. It looks like a mix between a canteen and a museum, which creates an atmosphere that I love! The exhibition they show at the moment is a photo series by the artist Yusuf Ahmed, called "Between Nostalgia & Dreams." If you're eating here, you should definitely check it out. It's such a beautiful exhibition.
The employees are all super nice and helpful, and the food is delicious! I will definitely come back when I'm in the area again. 😊

Amazing balanced plate

As a vegan athlete and dietitian, I am so impressed with the Ancient Vegan Bowl as it’s super balanced including a variety of food groups and nutrients! It is also super filling. I will definitely be coming back!

Yummmm

Delicious West African food with a well-described menu that's good for people who might be new to the cuisine. I wish the food was a bit heartier and oilier but it was still a spicy flavor-bomb (in a good way). I got the kale efo riro and black eyed peas with mafe sauce & jollof rice and it was a tasty combo though a bit dry. I would love to see them add a mushroom based dish onto their menu for that heartiness that I used to love in traditional West African dishes before I became vegan.

Very Tasty & Satisfying Food

This restaurant is super welcoming and offers various African centred foods from around the convenient. I got The Ancient Vegan Bowl which included: Jollof Rice (rice cooked in a spiced tomato broth)
- Efo Riro (kale, okra, dawadawa fermented locust bean, red palm fruit oil stew)
- Kelewele (spicy roasted plantains)
- Ndambe (black eyed pea, sweet potato, okra stew)
- Mafe (peanut sauce)
- Moyo (Mild, Onion, Tomato, Garlic, Scotch Bonnet Pepper).
This bowl is also customisable.
It was absolutely so delicious and filling that I was able to take some home!
I would 100% recommend this place.

Pros: Customisable vegan bowl, Friendly staff, Filling food

Cons: No vegan meats nor cheese

Delicious vegan options

A few vegan options, what they offered was delicious! Great spot for a casual lunch to bring family / friends who may not be vegan themselves but appreciate warm African spices. The black eyed pea stew and plantains were 10/10, great selection of drinks as well!

Pros: Great value, Delicious food

Cons: Limited menu

Cafe at African center

This cafe is located inside the African center on the corner of 5th and Central Park North. The cuisine is African. The selection is not broad--but what they have is very good, with ample and tasty food for vegans. The food is counter serve. Aside from the Jordan Pie Cafe a few blocks north, this is the best vegan-friendly place in the area.

Pretty good but nothing special

I was a bit disappointed, I didn’t find back the taste from other African restaurants I tried before but it is still a decent option if you are in the area. Be careful their tend to run out of food later in the day, I had to come back cause the first time they almost had nothing left !

Pros: Clearly labeled vegan option, Fu-fu bowl allow you to try different flavors

Cons: A little pricey , Not as good as other African restaurants I tried , They run out of food options later at night

A joy for vegans! A revelation; great setting overlooking Central Park.

I came here after reading a great review in the New Yorker magazine. It’s a beautiful, colorful environment, with wonderful views and huge windows overlooking the park. The many vegan options are delicious, and each item unique and distinct from each other. Peanut sauce is not something we find every day! Big beautiful wooden tables and unique seating all around. I like that it is counter service, so there is no waiting for food. Even the desserts were vegan, including a mango coconut pudding.

I do wish it were open later, as of now it seems to close at 7pm.

Pros: Lots of truly unique African options. , Very fresh ingredients. , Colorful, bright interior.

Cons: Closes at 7, closed Mondays.

awesome bowls

My omni friends and I stopped by and they both loved the fu-fu bowl but I recommend DIY: jollof fonio, ndambe, beets and fonio salad, black eyed pea salad, and yassa. The table sauces are vegan-friendly except for the clearly labeled fish sauce. I’d give this place five stars if the app would let me.

Pros: gluten-free and dairy-free, incredibly spacious, free lemon-infused water
