Authentic Indonesian Vegan Options

This place has my favorite Indonesian vegan options. I am Indonesian and it is hard to find vegan Indonesian options since most Indonesians cook with trasi or fermented shrimps. This place is owned and run by a Seventh Day Adventist who doesn’t eat shellfish. Thus lots of their dishes are vegan!!!
The taste is pretty authentic and spicy. The name of the place is actually Tempeh House Spicy Food. Tempeh is Indonesian origin. I grew up eating tempeh and love tempeh before becoming a vegan and before tempeh is popular among vegans.

My favorite vegan dishes from here are kale curry, Spicy Tempeh Stir Fry, Sayur Lodeh, Sambal Goreng Tempeh, Nasi Kuning, Ketoprak, Steamed Spiced Tofu in Banana Leaves, Fried Tempeh, Fried, Tofu, Es Cendol, emping, garlic krupuk, and tofu in soy sauce. Many! Mostly the dishes are served on a steamed table and ask which vegetarian dishes have no eggs or vegans.

The only thing is the place is not fancy. It is kind of a hole in the wall kind of place. It sits on a funky small strip mall in an industrial area by the airport. I don’t mind eating in this kind of establishment but I don’t bring certain friends here. Ha ha. I usually come with my brother and my husband, just families. However the price is realiy good and the portion is HUGE! The taste is yummmmy. Thus I keep coming back although it takes an hour to get there. That says it all!!! #Veganuary

Gooood!

Coconut rice had Coconut flakes and was really good. Tempeh and tofu dish were also really good and very flavorful. Was super pleased with the food and would definitely go back.

Authentic

The place is kinda ran down in a bad area, but the food was GOOD with flavors. I had the fried tempeh and non fried tempeh. I’m not sure what they were called, It was really hard for me to read the menu and know what to order (only my fault). The non fried tempeh had good flavor, just too spicy for me. The fried tempeh was good, ordered a side of non spicy peanut sauce for $3 to dip the fried tempeh in. The rice had coconut flakes on them, they were nice. It was a little dry, I’m glad I got the peanut sauce to pour on it. The coconut milk drink was yummy with lots of sugary flavor syrup. The meal was tasty but heavy, I felt big and sleepy after lol. Next time I’ll just order a couple fried tempehs and a peanut sauce to dip it in. I wouldn’t make it a regular thing, but I’ll go back sometime.

So delicious!

We stop here every time we’re even remotely close to San Bernardino (and it’s not a Saturday, since they’re closed on Saturdays)! The people here are so nice and welcoming and the food is delicious. The first time we came in 2015, they gave us a sample of every veggie dish on the hot bar and told us to sit down and try everything before we ordered—and it was so hard to decide, everything is AWESOME.

We always get two three-item combos and some fried tempeh on the side—enough food for three meals for less than $10/person! Half and half turmeric and coconut rice, coconut curry kale, the jackfruit, and fried tempeh are a must, but you can’t go wrong as far as I’m concerned. FYI for vegans, there are whole hard-boiled eggs in some of the vegetarian hot bar dishes—my husband usually just asks for no eggs, but you can also just skip those dishes completely! The snacks around the register are also very good.

5/5 stars, wish I lived closer by!!

Pros: Lots of delicious veggie and vegan options, Nice people and quick service, Cheap with huge portions

Hidden gem

Decent amount of vegan and vegetarian options which is woefully lacking in this area. Serves different preparations of tofu, tempeh and vegetables. Good sized portions and inexpensive too!

Pros: Excellent food, Good value, Friendly staff

Cons: Hole in the wall
