Wow, wow, wow! - Edit
I had heard about Tane opening in Berkeley for a while and thought I might like to try it. Tane's sister restaurant Shizen in SF has gotten rave reviews for years and I've never been able to get there. Tane blew me away! I went with some friends and it seemed like we ordered everything on the menu. We practically rolled out of there!
Read moreIt's not just sushi, it's small plates and you can get noodles. But definitely try the special rolls, they're off the charts!
The food is beautifully prepared and incredibly delicious! I will go there again and again.

amazing shared plates restaurant - Edit
the shared plates and appetizers here are amazing. it’s actually very reasonable to have a family style meal here and I would definitely recommend doing so over getting the sushi individually. the eggplant, brussels sprouts, tofu mushroom pockets, and katsu are my go-to.

Service has been getting better. Still not as good of an experience as Shizen in SF though, or the Honolulu location of Tane Vegan Izakaya

This is a five star vegan sushi place.

Surprisingly good appetizers and shared plates. Grilled mushrooms and Tane katsu are some of my favorites.
Especially like the EWA and Sunset rolls.
California roll is great if you are in the mood for a simpler roll.

Fire!!✨ - Edit
Yummy! I got the okra nigiri and shoyu ramen.
Read moreI appreciate that they have condiments on the table as soon as you sit down. Ginger, wasabi and soy sauce. Without those ingredients the food would have been just 'ight imo. The okra w pickled ginger on top started me off right! Then the ramen came and had a very light flavor. I mixed up the whole chunk of wasabi w plenty soy sauce and poured that in ramen as well as the rest of the ginger. Hooked that ramen up!!!!! 😋😋😋✨ so good!
Came by myself on a Friday night and was seated in 5 minutes. Definitely will return!

Sushi paradise!
Read moreThis place is packed every night so definitely make a reservation a week in advance or sit at the bar if it’s full.
It’s hip, modern, with nice moody atmosphere
Best Japanese sushi rolls and ramen! Everything was super good and it’s rare to come across a ramen that isn’t super heavy or greasy yet still tasty.
Not a fan of the bao bun here the bread was dry and crumbled and just simply not a fan of the fake meats in general although it did taste really good I probably wouldn’t get it again.

Absolutely loved everything we ordered here, as well as the vibe and decor. Fresh ingredients and lots of flavors while not being overwhelming. My favorite was the yuba nigiri!

Creative vegan sushi - Edit
In a world where non-vegans are incapable of fathoming what ‘vegan sushi’ would consist of, and when one does find vegan options at a sushi place it is invariably simple avocado or cucumber rolls, Tane has built an entire business around the traditional Japanese experience without attempting to replicate fish texture or flavor through mock meat. Their rolls are wonderful celebrations of plants with homemade sauces and immaculate presentation.

The food was delicious. It’s worth the price even if it’s expensive. The sauces were sooooo good. The sushis were creative and unique. Only thing I didn’t like was the miso soup starter. The portion of edamame was very cheap.

Fantastic Vegan Japanese Restaurant! - Edit
We've been to the first location in SF many many times and always make it a point to bring everyone we know there. Now we have an option in the Eastbay. Most of the items are exactly the same as Shizen in SF but the specialty roles are very different and delicious.

Fast service - Edit
Two of us stepped in and sat at the bar. Our orders came out extremely fast, which was a little problematic since we had limited table space on which to keep everything and felt rushed to finish our food to make room. But that wasn't too much trouble since everything was delicious. I enjoyed the flavors of the eggplant tataki, but it wasn't the easiest to eat with chopsticks: a spoon might have been better. The Barbers specialty roll is the Surprise Ending from Shizen, but strangely was brought out in the middle of our meal. My favorite was the Point Reyes roll, mostly because of the spicy sauce and hearty mushroom in the middle. The grilled mushrooms were also perfect. Would recommend making a reservation ahead of time (possibly over the phone).

Awesome sushi in EB - Edit
This is the sister restaurant to Shizen so if you have been there then you know what to expect. The rolls are similar to Shizen but have different names all have same amazing flavor. There's also a Tane location in Honolulu and it's also great with a huge dining room. Great spot for date nights and special occasions. May need to make reservations on busy nights.

I feel like I would’ve appreciated this place more if I hadn’t been vegetarian for so many years and vegan for 4. I would imagine people who really miss seafood sushi would really love this place and have an appreciation I didn’t.
Definitely get a reservation though and prepare to wait - it is very popular!
