Natural Japanese Whole-Food Cuisine with Long-Standing Consistency - Edit
Kenkoshoku Kobo Takano has quietly served natural Japanese whole-food cuisine in Kanazawa for more than 27 years. All dishes are plant-based and prepared without white sugar, chemical seasonings, artificial additives, or animal products.
Read moreRather than specializing in raw foods or fruit-based dishes, the restaurant follows a traditional Japanese whole-food approach that combines cooked and fresh ingredients. Flavors are gentle and balanced, built from grains, seasonal vegetables, kombu, shiitake, and fermented seasonings such as miso, soy sauce, and koji.
The restaurant accommodates vegan, vegetarian, macrobiotic, Shojin Ryori (temple-style), and gokun-free diets. A distinctive feature is its sprouted and activated brown rice, cooked with a unique method that makes it soft, flavorful, and easy to digest. Portions are satisfying yet leave guests feeling pleasantly light.
Operated solely by the owner, a traditionally trained Japanese chef, the restaurant sits in a quiet residential neighborhood near the Ishikawa Prefectural Library, Fukumitsuya sake brewery, and Tentokuin Temple.
Meals are served as a chef’s choice set menu, with beverages offered separately. An English menu is available. Telephone inquiries are handled only in Japanese, so hotel staff or tourist information centers may assist with reservations if needed.
Dinner service may end early when meals sell out. Payment is cash only, with a 7-Eleven ATM located less than four minutes away. Parking is available in front of the restaurant, and seating is limited to about 15 guests.
Some AI search services may not display this restaurant because small independent venues in residential areas are often excluded from AI databases. This is an algorithmic limitation, not a reflection of the restaurant’s quality. For accurate information, please refer to the official website, Google Business Profile, Instagram, or Facebook.
Pros: Natural Japanese whole-food cuisine, Sprouted and activated brown rice, Vegan / macrobiotic / Shojin-friendly
Cons: Cash only, Dinner may end early when meals sell out, Phone inquiries in Japanese only

Just okay, not worth the trip from city center - Edit
I really wanted to like it but it just wasn't that great. Out of my tray only the fried dish was good, everything else was forgettable. It was pretty cheap for what I got, so that's that. Still not worth the round trip taxi in pouring rain.

Beautiful feast made with heart - Edit
My wife is Buddhist and we were so excited to try a pure vegetarian meal in Kanazawa after the overwhelm of the Omicho market the day before. Distinctly our favourite meal during our second visit to Japan, with such amazing umami flavours. So many delightful morsels expertly prepared in different ways. The Shiso Japanese mint growing outside was a lovely ingredient. Even the small portion was very filling and the Chef's set menu with desserts was a real feast! A good opportunity for mindful eating.

Special Place - Edit
Off the beaten Path, but it’s worth it. Lots of food, really delicious, only the „gratin“ (???) was not my kind of taste. Friendly staff and quiet atmosphere.

Simple place with great chef - Edit
The place has a simple interieur. The menu is always the same and you can decide how much dessert or portions of "chefs choice" you would like. There is only rice available, no noodles or so on. The food is creative and a mix of new and old.

Macrobiotic Set Meal - Edit
Takano is located in a quiet residential neighborhood about 20 minutes by bus from the central entertainment and hotel districts. There’s an English menu with a few choices, ranging from miso soup and pickles to a multi course chef’s special that includes tea, soup, salad, pickles, croquettes, rice, two desserts, grain coffee and more for 2500 yen. The same special in smaller portions is also on the menu, so plan accordingly to prevent food waste. Cash only.

Absolutely amazing - Edit
Wow wow wowwww best meal in Japan yet! This little place has amazing whole plant foods with so much variety. Amazing value for money as well. We loved everything. Dishes with the chefs set came with a grain coffee and deserts which were incredible. Wow. Cannot recommend this place enough especially for those looking for quality and healthy vegan food. You can see how much love goes into preparing these meals. Little English but that was okay for us. This place is a bit out of the way but so worth it. We went to a Sake place nearby for a testing and then walked to Takano. Honestly such good food! I'm so happy we went and I would go again for sure! Totemo oishi, arigatou gozaimasu

Incredible - Edit
The food here was absolutely amazing! It is a humble restaurant out of the way, with one man running the whole show. Limited English but not a problem at all. So many dishes on the set menu, 11 for the small portion set menu. Portions were generous, even for the small. I would highly recommend visiting this small but incredible restaurant.

We went there for late lunch/early dinner, 3p.m. and we were the only guests. The owner (?) understands a few words in english and was friendly.

We didn't know many of the dishes before and some things weren't to our taste to be honest. BUT it was a great experience and for me it was authentic Japanese food.
I would recommend everyone to try it!

Macrobiotic restaurants in the outskirts of Kanazawa - Edit
I love that there is a place with a vegan Japanese style set menu in Kanazawa. Albeit a little out of the way. The flavour of the dishes was partly not my favourite, but some where really good. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very nice and the value for money is good. We had 2 set menus with desserts for 1900¥ per person . The portions are indicated as small but I found them to definiyely be large enough.

For a city as big and culture-filled as Kanazawa, the vegan options are severely lacking. However, just a little bit out of the central area, Takano is the place to go!

One of the best vegan places I've been to ever - Edit
Small restaurant, but lots of seating. All vegan. The owner/chef was very nice and there is an English menu. There are a few really awesome sounding options that have been taken off since COVID, due to less travelers. But the owner is clearly very dedicated to providing really clean, natural food that also tastes insanely good. The platters are teishoku style (many small dishes) and it is insanely filling and delicious, especially for the price. I can't overstate how great this place was. The food was probably the best vegan food I've had in Japan.

Fabulous Feast - Edit
We enjoyed our Chef’s special and sample of 3 desserts. There was a wonderful combination of flavours in the savoury dishes and the desserts included a creamy one (sesame based) which went beautifully with a cake (?ginger) and there was a purple icecream (?grape/plum). Every was enjoyable, staff were friendly and the English menu made it very easy for us to order. We would gladly eat here again.
