Awesome all vegan taco place!

This place is great and definitely worth supporting as a rare all-vegan Mexican restaurant. In addition to their tacos, I highly recommend their tres leches cake, street corn, and house marg.

Amazing experience

First time in and asked for chefs choice of the tacos. One was impossible chorizo ,carne asada and the last I think was biria mushroom. The hot sauces at the table were amazing, tried the homemade guacamole and chips, and sides of pinto and the rice- somehow they got a ton of amazing Smokey flavour. Loved it.

Impressed!

I had a wonderful experience here. Our server was very sweet and we ordered A LOT. My non vegan sister was even impressed and that’s very hard to do. Cannot wait to go back!

A new Richmond staple

Taco Vegana opened just about a month ago and it’s quickly become a fave! I drop in every time I’m in Richmond.

I’m particularly impressed by the team’s dedication to building an inclusive and lively environment and an ambitious and authentic menu. I love the owner’s story of bringing the Mexican cuisine he grew up with to what’s now his children’s hometown. Their attention to detail and personal touches really bring the place to life!

Menu highlights include the three taco plate (any and all of the tacos are delicious but el guerro and the chick’n alambre are my faves), the Richmond burrito, and the soyrizo or carne asade nachos (this is honestly the toughest choice to make).

The bar staff has also nailed it with the cocktail menu - you can tell they like what they do and are super proud of what they’ve created. I don’t drink often, but even the mocktails are incredible and I was glad to see the local beer rotation.

They’re very quickly ironing out some new restaurant kinks and I can’t wait to go back!

I had high hopes and was let down

Tacovegana is a place I truly wanted to love. There has been a lot of buzz around this new spot, and as someone who was genuinely excited for an all vegan Mexican eatery in the city, I came in with high hopes.

Unfortunately, the experience fell flat. It started with the horchata. I ordered the non alcoholic version for $14 and was surprised by how small it was. At that price point, I honestly assumed refills would be included, but none were offered. From there, the food took quite a while to come out. When it did, the street corn was clearly canned, which was pretty disappointing. The burrito, priced at $18, was on the small side and came out lukewarm, as did the beans and rice, which cost extra. Overall, the flavors were bland and did not taste particularly authentic. I ended up paying over $60 before tip for a bowl of canned corn, a small bland burrito, and rice and beans. Others in my party had similar reactions and were let down as well.

All that said, I do not think Tacovegana is a lost cause. The atmosphere is nice, and the concept of a fully vegan Mexican restaurant is fantastic and something the city could really benefit from. It just feels poorly executed at this stage. I sincerely hope they take feedback to heart and make some changes, because with better value, fresher ingredients, and more attention to flavor and temperature, this could become a go to spot instead of a disappointment.

Pros: Atmosphere, Concept

Cons: Lack of flavor, Price, Portion sizes
