Sutton & Sons - 3.75

I liked the vegan fish and chips here. They are made with banana blossom, and taste very good with their vegan aïoli sauce. This dish is very oily though, but I was expecting this.

Overhyped

I was recommended the vegan fish- which is just omnifish I could have eaten at home. Portion of chips was ridiculously large so I had to throw most of them away. No cutlery or crockery available, just disposable packaging. No condiments available for customers either- just packets to purchase. I’ve heard other items on the menu are better.

Cons: Expensive , Way too much packaging , Wasteful portion sizes

Solid option but I've had better

This is a pretty standard fish and chip restaurant set up with some seating and an area for ordering and taking away. I was impressed to see that they had a separate vegan menu with a great selection including banana blossom, calamari, omni, battered sausage and pies. However the sides were just on the regular menu and the server was unsure whether the curry sauce or gravy was vegan (so I didn't risk either).

Me and my wife went for the banana blossom, vegan calamari, a large chips and two pots of mushy peas. The food was decent but I wasn't blown away. The chips were nice and chunky with a generous portion size, although I found them a bit stodgy. I thought the banana blossom was also lacking. It was greasy, slimy and tasted quite strongly of lemon and not much else. I was disappointed as when banana blossom is cooked well it is really good. The vegan calamari was better and had quite a nice flavour. The mushy peas were also pretty good and came in a nice big pot.

Sutton and Sons is a decent option if you're craving fish and chips as a separate vegan menu is quite unusual at fish and chip shops, however there are much better options such as Codfellas (Peckham) and Brockleys Rock (Peckham/Lewisham area). There's also Unity Diner which is fully vegan and does a very tasty Tofish and chips (it is a sitdown restaurant though and I'd recommend booking in advance).

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Great selection, Decent food

Cons: The banana blossom wasn't great, Chips were a bit stodgy, Weren't sure if curry sauce or gravy was vegan

Not strictly vegetarian

Unfortunately this branch (Islington) certainly does NOT fry their vegetarian options separately to their meat and fish, so if you care about cross-contamination, this place isn't for you.

Additionally, we messaged them on Instagram ahead of time to double check and they assured us they were cooked separately, however we noticed the shop was particularly small so we asked the guy at the counter who told us clearly that they fried everything together in the same oil.

We replied on Instagram saying we were disappointed and they never responded to apologise or offer an explanation or anything. Shrug.

Interesting taste

I had the vegan fish and chips at this restaurant. Sadly for me it didn’t taste like fish at all, more like an artichoke. The chips were amazing and they serve vegan dips Kirk garlic mayo with it. The stuff was really nice and they have a separate vegan menu.

Great discovery

The Banana blossom fish and chips is really good, just lacks a sauce (a vegan aïoli would be perfect with it).

They also have a "to fish and chips"

You have to try it

I don’t really know how to describe the experience! It was a very small place but quite nice. The vegan ‘fish’ and chips made out of banana blossoms was something new! Can’t really describe it. Worth a try tho’!

I’m more to the thin fries - these chips were huge. Almost like a quarter of a potato each chip. But they were o.k.

Pros: Quite a few vegan options , Vegan menu

Banana blossom ‘fish’ was amazing

We came here to try out the fish and chip vegan menu and were not disappointed. The banana blossom had such a great texture - perfect as ‘fish’! Will be back
soon to try other items on the vegan menu as there were quite a few options.
Also serve normal fish and chips so caters for all.

Pros: Separate vegan menu , Fish alternative was great

Vegan fish & chips

The banana blossom fish was interesting. Nice taste. The texture isn't really fish-like but that's ok.
They carry the Steak & Ale pie from Young Vegans, which is excellent, especially with mash and onion gravy.
The "calamari" made of seitan was a bit wired and not super tasty.
Overall the main issue is that it's still a chip shop, everything is deep fried and super oily and a bit cheap. The taste you get is mainly the fried batter.

Pros: Several vegan options , Pie from Young Vegans, Good size, good value, nice staff

Cons: Cheap fried taste

Very interesting

When I first of the vegan fish and chips I immediately knew I had to go there. Making a vegan fish from banana blossom is pretty cool and it tasted great. The staff was very friendly. Only the mushy peas had a weird aftertaste.

Pros: Good portions, Seperate vegan menu

Your regular traditional chippy but with vegan options

After hearing and reading lots about their signature banana blossom “fish”, I dragged a visiting friend here hoping to provide her with an original (but cruelty-free) British chippy experience. We shared a medium bag of chips and the “fish” between the two of us and it turned out to be quite a lot; we could hardly finish it.
The main event tasted very salty and actually fish-like. We were both impressed, but I wished that I’d had some kind of sauce to make everything less dry.
The food was very affordable and exactly what I wanted my friend to sample. Next time I take someone to Sutton & Sons, I will try their tofish (and maybe also a battered “sausage”, who knows).

A great classic chippy!

The staff are friendly and efficient. There is more than one vegan option which is uncommon and much appreciated. The food is fresh (for a chip shop) and tasty.

Pros: A few vegan options, Cracking chips, The vegan sausage is 👌🏼
