Fresh, flavorful, inspired

Delicious! By far one of the best vegan meals I’ve had in Chicago. Sunda’s food is colorful , flavorful, beautiful, and generously portioned.
Everything I tried was great, though the highlights were the sweet potato noodle dish and the coconut curry sauce underneath the grilled vegetables. Absolutely amazing!
I appreciated that vegan dishes were clearly labeled on the menu and not just and afterthought in terms of ingredients and composition. I left stuffed and very happy to have stopped by.
The only downside was service. Our waitress kind of ignored us, which was frustrating. But once we ordered food came relatively quickly.

Pros: Delicious food, Generous portions , Many vegan options

Cons: Poor service , Loud

Fine dining for vegan and non-vegan friends!

The salads are fantastic! Particularly the Japanese pickled salad and the brussel sprout salad. Their sushi is beautiful, the chap chae is one of my favorite dishes in Chicago, and the cocktails are creative and supreme.

Pricy and Tasty

Very upscale place, the vegan options are integrated into the main menu now. We had the edamame, the Chap Chae, and the sweat porateo caterpillar sushi. All delicious. Definitely a pricy night, especially if you add cocktails too!

Pros: Vegan sushi, Vegan Noodles, Clearly marked menu

Cons: Expensive

Sunda

I’ve only eaten here during a work lunch. They have a separate vegan menu that you need to ask for. I would just recommend telling the server that you have an allergy to meat and dairy, as they would likely respect that over you telling them you are vegan (I know people have had problems with servers at this restaurant giving them trouble about being vegan). The food I had during lunch was average quality/taste and I never felt inclined to go back on my own for a personal meal.

Ok

My wife wanted to go here on a Friday night in Chicago to see celebrities. The food and drinks were ok, but pretty expensive. The atmosphere is loud and she didn't see any celebrities.

Also, we told our waitress that we were vegan, and she got us a vegetarian/vegan menu, which was nice. When we asked for the check, they brought us out an unexpected, nice looking dessert with a lit candle for my wife's birthday, but it wasn't vegan, so we had to turn it down, and the only vegan option was sorbet, so that was disappointing.

I think there are better options for vegan food in Chicago.

Pros: Trendy place

Cons: Expensive , Loud

Good, but pricey.

Had a vegan menu which was nice. Everything I’ve had was good, but it’s more expensive than I’d like. Would rather go to many other Asian places instead.

Vegan Menu

They have a great vegan menu. The food was delicious!! I had the grilled veggies. So good! My only complaint was that the edamame had oil on it, but I don’t remember it saying anything about it on the menu. I’m not used to that. I Just prefer it steamed.

Pros: Extensive Vegan Menu, Delicious , Nice atmosphere & location

Cons: Crowded, Pricey, Oil on the edamame was weird

Amazing brussel sprouts and cauliflower!

We appreciated the separate vegan menu. We ordered the fried rice, crispy brussel sprout salad, miso cauliflower, adobo mushrooms, and dumplings. The cauliflower and brussel sprout salad was definitely my favorite, but the fried rice was flavor-less. We had plenty of leftovers, the portions are big and filling, and the cocktails are pretty good.

My only complaint would be the service, our server was not very friendly.

Pros: Vegan menu, Filling

Cons: Service is eh

Thoughtful options and attentive staff

The wait staff were on the move and very friendly and attentive. Our server was careful and communicative of my friends but and sesame allergy. The chefs modified sushi rolls for her. The vegan menu came as a separate menu which was lovely and the same options were still on the main menu as well. Just made it much easier to find safe foods. I got the miso cauliflower and it was so savory and crispy and saturated with flavor. My non vegan friends loved it too. Started with the shishito. Simple and delicious. Then the shitake edamame dumplings. The texture was very nice, heavy on the truffle though. The atmosphere was great and the acoustics were good too. Young atmosphere in terms of music. Odesza played. Some girls had a bday party for their friend next to us and brought champagne and the staff filled the glasses for when the guests arrived. It was a great night out and the drink menu was extensive and bougie. Was a little on the pricey side but the portions were big and those three things were quite enough to fill me up.

Pros: They have a separate menu for vegans , Lots of options and not just veggies in a roll , Staff was highly attentive to allergies and value

Cons: Expensive , Only 3 vegan sushi rolls on the menu

Amazing!!!

I would give them five stars if I could. We called ahead to let them know we were vegan and boy am I glad we did!!! Not only did the executive chef Jess come out to our table to ask us what vegan dishes we wanted, but he made us many things not on the menu. We had asked on the if he could make vegan tempura, so he asked us which veggies we wanted. The mushroom tempura was delicious. He also surprised us with four different vegan sushi nigiri options. The waiter said he is experimenting to hopefully add some to their menu. All were great but the two stand outs were the tomato and mushroom sushi’s. The street corn and dumplings were so yummy too. Left this restaurant feeling full and well taken care of.

Pros: Very receptive chef and staff, Custom made us dishes, Vegan menu

Cons: A bit expensive

Good vegan friendly Asian-fusion

I visited for dinner with a few non-vegan friends, and the food was good, but not great, and quite expensive; the best element was the very friendly and helpful service.

The vegan menu (https://sundanewasian.com/sundamenus/Sunda-Vegan-Gluten-Free-Menu.pdf) is quite good - some appetisers, including edamame and dumplings, vegetables, sushi and salad dishes, and one plate each of rice and noodles for dinner.

The food is intended for sharing, so the plates are fairly small - for a normal meal you'd probably need about 2 per person; most are around 15 dollars, so the price will be about 30-40 dollars per head.

Pros: Good vegan selection, Very good service

Cons: A bit expensive, Not many protein-rich vegan dishes

They serve foie gras☹️

They do have a separate vegan menu which is really good however I can’t get the past that they had multiple foie gras items on their regular menu. Everything was also too greasy for me.

Decent menu, dishes were hit or miss.

I went during Sunday brunch time and had the shiitake edamame dumplings, Manchurian cauliflower, vegetable curry, and all three of the signature sushi rolls. The dumplings and cauliflower packed the biggest punch in terms of flavor. The other dishes tasted good, but they weren't anything to write home about.

Overall, I always give props to a restaurant the provides a separate vegan menu (bonus points when this is actually on their website and not some cryptic thing you need to be in the know about). That being said, the serving sizes were small for the price and quality of the items and although I appreciated the creativity of the sushi rolls, they all lacked taste over presentation.

They are on OpenTable so I made a reservation, but the place was huge so I'm not sure how necessary this really was. The ambiance was great and the staff was friendly. I visited because I knew about the menu and received a gift card, but I don't believe I'd go out of my way to go again unless it was to meet up with some omni friends or give them another shot by trying their dinner menu.

Pros: vegan menu, delicious dumplings

Cons: expensive
