Disappointing - Edit

We went here in early Nov 2009. It is quite far away from the city center. It took us about 45 minutes by taxi from South Gate. It's a bit difficult to find. Luckily, we'd had our hostel call the restaurant ahead of time & they wrote the directions in Chinese.

The building is very large & on a corner. It's really a complex that also has a tea room, yoga center, & other facilities. The restaurant is nicely decorated. The menu is quite large, contains both pictures and English descriptions, and clearly lists the ingredients of each dish. Some items contain dairy and egg products. The servers were friendly, but a bit pushy. They wouldn't give us time to look at the menu even when we asked for them to wait. Still, we thought they were being helpful since they were recommending certain dishes to us. We went ahead and got the two that they recommended (sweet & sour pork and a vegetable stock pot) since the menu was so big and we would have needed more time to decide. We got one other dish: braised eggplant with taro. Somehow, in the commotion of ordering, they got my dining partner to order us drinks without my noticing. He said they were quite pushy. Unfortunately, they (this part of the menu was not written in English) turned out to be yogurt drinks. Since I'm vegan, this was a waste of 20 rmb. My husband was not impressed by his.

Something that made us suspicious was that the two dishes the server recommended came out almost immediately whereas the other dish took considerably longer to make an appearance. Neither of the first two dishes was particularly good. The sweet and sour pork was okay, but the mock meat had been over fried. The vegetable stock pot contained milk in the broth. This had not been listed or pictured on the menu, so that was disappointing for me. My husband said it was okay except for the tofu, which tasted fermented. We wondered if these plates had perhaps already been made by accident and that's why they were recommended to us. The braised eggplant came & we were dismayed to find that it was neither truly braised nor worthy of being called eggplant. It was basically taro dumplings stuffed with a miniscule amount of eggplant, deep fried, and then put in a bit of brown sauce. It wasn't bad, but not what we were hoping for.

All of this came to about 120 rmb for two people, but 40 of that was for the hardly touched yogurt drinks. Like the review title says, the whole experience was disappointing, but maybe other dishes would be better.

Pros: nice atmosphere, large menu, beautiful food presentation

Cons: inconvenient location, so-so food, pushy staff
