A True Diamond In The Rough - Edit
My husband and I heard about this restaurant not far from where we live in Florence, AL and decided to try it out on a whim for lunch. 😱 HOLY. VEGAN. COMFORT. FOOD.
Read moreWe started off the meal with some fresh lemonade and a virgin mojito. Our waitress also brought us water and lit the candle on our table.
My husband asked about the fried pickles we heard about because he hasn’t had any since we’ve been vegan. They weren’t on the menu but the owner/chef made us some anyway and they were INCREDIBLE. While we were waiting for those to be made fresh, my husband had French Onion Soup topped with smoked vegan Gouda and house made bread. I had their vegan lobster bisque. Let me tell you, that was the first time I had anything “seafood” since becoming vegan and this New England girl nearly lost her lashes tearing up at the table it was SO good!
For most people, that was likely enough food, but we still had our entrees to go!
Next, my salad and garlic bread were brought to the table. The salad had some kind of delicious berry vinaigrette and some homemade pickled onions, while the house made garlic bread would have had my Italian grampy come back from the grave to eat!
For our entrees my husband had the juicy, flavorful double decker cheeseburger and crispy fries while I had to hold back the tears again over my vegan seafood lasagna… SO creamy, rich, and just divine with some crispy broiled cheese on top. Spoiler alert: I couldn’t finish it! 😂
We took the rest of our food to go and ordered some cheesecake and butter pecan cake with brown butter sauce to go!
While that was being arranged we had the pleasure of meeting the owner and chef herself, Ms Carlyn Saunders who proceeded to chat with us about veganism, her history, the history of the bed and breakfast home, and more… complete with a personal tour!
The part that moves me the most is that at 76 years old, Ms Carlyn not only runs the bed and breakfast and vegan cafe with her family, she also offers a wellness program for those suffering with chronic or life-threatening illnesses, AND, literally NO ONE gets turned away. Why? The menu clearly states:
“We’re a donation based cafe. Values listed beside each item represent suggested donations, not prices. We’ll appreciate any amount you choose to give. - Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; - Isaiah 55:1”
We WILL be back!!
Pros: 100% vegan, Mocktail Menu, Fabulous customer service/ personalized experienc
Cons: Cons?! None that I can find!
